Rupe,
I'll go short and sweet. If I create something it belongs to me. Granted its sad some have deleted their posts and changed their minds about openly sharing with the group but that is their right. We can morn the loss and such but why place rules against others?
I enjoy beyond words the open sharing we have here because it is open. Would you wish to read someones thoughts against their wishes?
Lets keep it open.

See short and sweet.
Ahh, that we could do one big AP get together now that would be something?
Spose J&A would be the only ones with enough Fish and Cider though.

The needs of the few, or the needs of the one, outweigh the needs of the many? How very un-Spock like of you! (For those of you not in the know, Spock is a fictional character from the series Star-Trek. I believe it was the movie "The Wrath of Khan" where Spock sacrifices his life to protect the others on the ship while his friend, Capt. Kirk looks on, unable to help him.)

Yep, It was in the Wrath of Khan. AND WHAT do you mean FICTIONAL,
,,I object , it's real and truly.

Gotfish,,,So a reporter for the "New York Times" has a disagreement with his Editor,,,can he demand every paper be re-called? Can he run around with a pair of scissors cutting out his article from other peoples papers?

Anyway , I'll ask Spock, he'll have the logical answer.

Oh, oh.... it's the wrath of Chappo!!!I put the word "fictional" in for those who don't know yet!

Seriously though, GotFish, I understand your position. Sadly, I wish YOU were president right now. You seem very compasionate that those things that belong to us should always be ours. On the other side of this argument, is the loss of knowledge and that is tragic indeed. There is no right or wrong answer here, only which is the lesser of two evils.

Isn't it a second ammendment right to bear edit buttons? I'm sure it's in the constitution somewhere. It has become politically correct to remove the rights of others because of a few bad eggs.

If the few upset people with attitudes yank their (that's there with no edit button) post... will it really hurt the integrity of the board? I say let them go... and then someone without a chip on their shoulder can fill in the blanks if necessary. Besides that... this board is loaded with valuable treasures right now... and if a few fell out of sight... what difference would it make as there is much repeat info here.

I've only been here long enough to see one body do such a thing. So.... by my thinking... it's pretty sad that some that lead take away something .... that to the majority (or maybe just me) ... is probably more valuable... (the edit button) than somebody's post.

It's kinda Big Brother like. Don't let them ( the commoners) be responsible for their actions.

Maybe we can organise or is that organize another entity.... The National Edit Button Association.

I nominate John "Gotfish" Heston for president. Those that want an edit button can send GF $25 annually, and for that little donation, will receive a decal... bumper sticker... and a NEBA hat ... embossed with a golden edit button. Then we... the EB folks will have a voice to carry on with our agenda. Thanks John

the edit button is missing... where's the little "stepping off the soap box" gif?

pardon the rant... I know by my lack of posting... I have little right to complain... but I hate to post and not be able to correct what was written... as mistakes are many.

It was not and is not my intention to cause conflict. (Disclaimer)

Chappo, a reporter is paid for the words so his/her creation is the property of the paper I suspect. I can see the the parallels in that we are on the barter system. I give, you give, we both get.

I did like Omega Man, can't remember much else CH was in, past the monkey planet flicks. Ohh, Ben Hurr! Now that was the original Nascar. Left Turn.

  :o AHHH Aussie site , so no amendments , just one of the best legal system in the world ( yep we copied the UK system).
Actually , this has become one of my favourite threads , people have conveyed their opinions and kept a smile and happy demeanour whilst expressing their point of view. Personaly I don't care that much about this edit button ,, if I uncowektly spellt dA WOOYD IT kno biggen pwoblemo.
The people who or whom ? most often make spelling and grammatical errors have English as their second or third language. It is easy to see the mistake ,, but think hard ,, a small mistake in a second or THIRD language ,, who or whom is showing less intellect.
Myself , I speak , beer / whiskey AND some Australian ,, I'm working on my English and American.

"The edit button" ....., I'm torn ,, but I'm siding with keeping that power away from those that may hurt the knowledge base. I totally disagree with Islam , but i would fight to stop anyone wanting to rip pages from the original Koran.

It's true to state that the site has not been damaged in any noticable way , but what has happened has triggered thoughts of what may happen if several major contributors followed a similiar " destructive" ( in my opinion vandalistic ) path.

I guess the best compromise is to "back-up" the most important info into wiki and then "risk" letting that edit button return ( hopefully with constraints).

YOU, do you know how many times I had to read that before I understood it!!!!

Charleton Heston- The movie Solent Green- "You've gotta tell them! Soylent Green is people!" A little campy because of the '60 overtones but a great sci-fi!

Regardless of my own personal views as to whether the edit button should or shouldn't be made available, I must point out that this is a free forum and people choose whether to contribute, whether to read and whether, through doing so, obtain benefit from other people's posts.

When one spits the dummy and deletes their posts, claiming that they are their propery, do they also return all the knowledge and benefit that they have obtained from others on the forum. I think not. In my view - regardless of what preceded the deletions, they are selfish pricks with no self control.

It is unfortunate that the edit button has been taken away due to the actions of a few and we all hope that it will return in some shape of form in due course, but lets all not forget that this forum has served us all well and in the most part places very few rules on us as contributers or receivers of information.

The problem I have with no edit button is now I have to think more carefully about what I post, no flying off the handle, no disrespectful comments because I know I can fix them up when I calm down.

My biggest concern is I will become a better person against my will

I am already learning patience in preparation for starting my BYAP system and not being able to edit my posts will help me there :D

You will all just have to put up with the fact that I have increased my typing speed in two out of five typing fingers and sometimes letters get the wrong way around. Dyslexics won't even be aware of this

It's a change, we will get used to it :D

I would prefer to see it back, but if it does not then I respect the decsion also.

My main preference for having it there is for threads that track data eg viewtopic.php?p=125779#p125779 This thread we are trying to track weight vs size. as more data comes back in we need to update the graphs. constants putting u new ones makes it harder to find. A bit like ELLKby's siphons thred. Image having to sift through all the posts to get the full summary as he has updated on the first post many times.

As I type this I am starting to see the value of the wiki, but still leaves the data tracking a bit more difficult.

Nice point Sky...I think that in this case, the best thing to do would be to contact a mod to do the update (or ask for special privileges)
