Hi Mizzie:
I started with crenellations on the bottom of my pipe, but I've had several fish get long gashes in their sides I think from the crenellations and temperature shock or aggression from other fish. During a couple temperature shocks several fish would just float around paralyzed and end up at the drain pipe, then revive but cut themselves on the notches in the drain pipe. Normally the fish wouldn't end up stuck like that. However my pipe didn't reach the bottom of the tank fully, there was about a 1 or 2cm gap between the end of the pipe and the tank bottom.

Anyway to avoid sharp edges I redid the bottom of the drain pipe by cutting the crenallations off the drain pipe, cutting slits in a short section of smaller diameter pipe using my miter saw, and dropped that section of pipe down the drain pipe. It slid down to the tank bottom and will also adjust if the drain pipe gets nudged by the fish as it sometimes does.

I drilled a few holes then covered these and the bottom of the pipe with a plastic mesh. Works well to extract the solids.

If you want to get risky you could do a no-holes overflow and still have CHIFT PIST.
