I've set this thread up so anyone who has some bizzaro or rare or funky medicinal plants can offer to swap cuttings or seed for another from another member.

i'd like this to be a swap policy on this.

alright, we will soon have seeds for Ceylon Spinach, grows REALLY well

will soon have among other things a goto kola plant and toothache plant seeds (spilanthes oleracea)

also have Brazilian spinach, taro, water chestnuts, galingal, rosellas

oh yeah, went to the Herb Soc on the weekend, also got Sweet leaf, Jamaican arrowroot, cassava, tassia, aloe vera, more eastern bloc cress, pennyroyal

ok, ill want a few of those............

a miracle plant is also arriving, but will have to grow it before i can take cuttings.

queen of herbs, lemongrass, midyim berry (if it ever grows enough to take a cutting)

btw I'm trying aloe vera in ap like tclynx - seems to be not dying at the moment.

Can we make Aussies on BYAP truly aware of quarantine protocols .... ask them not to order seed from people overseas!

This is very important!

I know that many veggie seeds are purchased and introduced into Australia via internet sites from backyard operators (with good intent) from all over the world. However microscopic life from other countries is just as capable (if not more so) of being as destructive and decimating as cane toads in our isolated continent.

eg. It is easy for someone to order a rare species from a home based website, they pack it in an envelope, it gets past customs, (they can't screen every item!)

This uninspected unlicenced home grown seed packet may carry strange viruses from overseas into your neck of the woods with the potenial to infect destroy vast tracts of fruit, cereal, vegetable crops.

Then we have a major disease on our hands ..( maybe viral - such as an equivalent of tobacco mosaic virus, or some other bacterial, fungal or viral bearing seed from a "home based business" in Africa, Asia, Europe, N. America, S.America, eventually finds its way to Australia and devastates some part of our agriculture.

We are so isolated, we must be very careful not to upset the balance. We do not have scrapie, foot and mouth, mad cow disease, rabies and others due to our vigilance.

In this era of global communication I ask that we must be ever more vigilant to protect our unique flora , fauna and farming livelihood from unwittingly introduced diseases.

For example, at the moment our bees are doing reasonably OK, we have pretty tight control regards imports of honey etc...
but the threat from introduced diseases as experienced in many countries, the knock on effect regards poliination is ever present and would be devastating to our food production!

So for Australia ...

We even have interstate quarantine laws to protect our varied flora and fauna.

Some of our plants are not at all resistant to foreign bacterial, fungal, or viral diseases, let alone tiny insects like sap sucking mites that may hitch a ride and pass on some horrible viruses...

We have to be very careful, vigilant, legal and think it through.

BTW ... the bandicoot family that visit from a hole in the fence now feed from our hands, and the oldest female (Mum) who has a joey in the pouch and another running around her, allows my youngest daughter to put her hand right inside the pouch (backward facing, like a wonbat) to check on the next baby banicoot... which is nearly ready to hop out to make room for the next one which is locked onto and currently engorging itself on mum's milk from her teat!

I agree that it is probably a good idea to keep trading of plant materials restricted to within our own countries at the very least (if no to within our own provinces or states.) (I know Florida is pretty strict about transporting plant materials but they can't inspect everything.)
Partially due to the risks involved but on a more immediate practical side, shipping cuttings overseas would probably be a waste of the shipping charges since many would probably not survive the trip. Seeds might be more likely to make it but again, there are probably legal ways to get many of them for cheaper than the shipping.

That aside, Anyone in the SE or specifically Florida interested in ALOE. I got lots! It's all the medicinal stuff that you use on burns and sores and such.

I've got some Malabar spinach (Basella rubra) some red vine and some green vine seed that I'm not likely to grow much more of. We didn't really like the taste of the leaves though the plants were attractive.

And Broadleaf Plantain. Generally thought of as a lawn weed so if it is already growing around your area, you won't need mine but I could never find any around here and had to collect seed elsewhere to get a regular stock of it here. Very useful for helping heal scrapes, stings, burns, bites etc. Also very nutritious.

Oh, and I have stevia growing so hopefully I will get more successful at starting cuttings to share. This plant is a good sweetener.

i assume you know of the poor viability of the stevia seeds since you mentioned cuttings

J.AU good point mate, and if thats not enough quarantine penalties are HARSH

people should also know that, in australia at least, many medicinal plants while legal to grow are NOT legal to import, some attracting the same penalty for an qual amount of heroin importation.

I've got A fair few Thai Basil , and Royal basil seeds, super hot chillie seeds.

Also have seeds for a wonderful Thai tree ..... don't know the English name ,, but the young leaves are eaten with oysters and the seeds are eaten from the pods. I keep mine pruned around 2 Metres and they're quite attractive.
