I've searched all over the forum but I've only got two threads one making a joke about being crazy while the other one was based in Queensland...

I was wondering does Western Australian Government allow residents to have fish growing in their swimming pools? and if not or so so, can you provide a link to such a legislation? I've been looking for 2 days and can seem to find anything of any substance even on http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/

if there's no information like that, does that mean that I'm free to go ahead and use it. (Provided of course, that I change the pumps and filtration and some pool specifics in the process)

I've got no idea on the rules for WA, but there are a number of threads discussing pool conversions. There should be some other WAians along soon enough who may have some info for you.

ETA: maybe even ring one of the pool shops and see what they say?

I called about half a dozen pool shops before I came across answering machines... they all say that they aren't aware of regulations against keeping fish in the swimming pool though some mentioned that the pool would have to be treated and somehow washed before I even put new water in it for the fish as chlorine kills them.
I'm already aware of that..
One of them suggested calling spasa of wa... it's a association for pool and spa shop sellers apparently and I tried calling them but they're closed till tomorrow... buh I cant wait!

Nothing against the conversion as far as my guru's can work out, but could cost a lot to clean and fill, the only problems in WA is a pool fence which you should have, and you must stock your pool with with fish sourced in WA, fisheries don't take kindly to imported fish from the east, but I feel this has been done before and will be done again  , talk to forum boss Earthbound he should be able to help you out

The other thing Jensilaedi is the fish shouldn't be able to escape into storm water drains, but have friends as well that have converted pools and they haven't been busted, no difference to fish or people in your pool, other than people generally don't crap in your pool I suppose

that's easy enough as I can keep the water level like about 50 cms below the aerator or the storm water drain slot. the only problem with that is the rain filling it up. I was thinking about the whole lily, and lotus plant idea when a mate reminded me about the rain. I might have to be some kind of rainproof sail over it to minimise the water instead.

Ahh well it's an idea i'm thinking about in the long run, just had to start thinking about it seriously as it will take time to work out the specifics and do the math of how much ammonia vs flowrate vs size of GB's. at first I thought a continuous flow would be good, but reading through this forum has me liking the idea of F&D more and more especially with the use of autosiphons and valves.

FYI I'm setting up a mini system to make sure my understanding of aquaponics actually works, before I do anything major. :cyclopsani:

Very good idea on setting up a small system to get some practice and see what you like/works for you etc.

As to regulations, well at least you looked to see if there were any. I would look for anything specifically permitting such use (too outside of the box for most people) and since you didn't find anything specifically prohibiting it, you can probably get away with it. So long as your not selling the fish or opening your pool to the public, there is probably little reason for any authorities to know about it unless there are regular pool inspections or something like that.

Good luck!

actually... we do have regular pool inspectors... they come once in every 2 or so years  that's a point... i could check with my local council! They'd be the best people to get that kind of information from.
Cheers for the inspiration :P
