GLR, there is a variety from the small hobbyist, teachers working on education projects, farmers adapting it to their lifestyle right up to those who are/intend to do AP on a commercial basis, each generously donate their time to help each other (especially newbies) - does get off topic at times tho (stress relief).

Myself, I got blown away when I saw it televised on landline a month or so ago and decided to build a small system so that I could understand the whole concept - now I am in the planning stage to build a slightly larger/robust system.

Where to start here, the main points I like to highlight is to take your time, read all the topics on this forum (yes it takes awhile) and get your head straight into what size you feel is adequate for you and if you don't understand something put your hand up - you will get a positive response coupled with a few ribald remarks but we all enjoy it and love to help others to enjoy our passion too

Love those qlders

Les

I'd agree with les on "take your time" not like be, i bury a 1 cubic meter 1000L tank and then think "dang, that should have been 3 meters to the left

BUT i reckon get a mini system going ASAP! two tubs like in S77's system, one with a couple of goldies, and one with some gravel. a cheap continuous pump.

It will give you a taste for things while you do you planning for your "master award winning system" as well as provide you with a good serving of bacterially seeded and nitrogen cycled gravel that you can move over to your big system.

Umm, sorry if I sound stupid, but did I not follow up something from earlier? Thanks so much for your help :)

How long is a pice of string? I think davids done it for about $30 and joels was a few thousand. Its totally up to YOU

Damn string... always the way ;)

Cheaper? probably, considering you're getting fish as well as veggies. There is also the 90% odd water saving over dirt gardens. There is the added benifit of knowing EXACTLY what goes into your system, IE the fish food.

Good points! I never thought about how much water you'd save, but tis evidently tonnes. I actually was asking for a price comparison with bought food from a supermarket (cos I currently dont' have a garden).

Permi gardens seem pretty easy (i'd like to set one up soon, the one with the newspaper and straw) but aqua would definatly be more fun, and you have the added bonus of people thinking you're stark raving MAD

I've done the 'no dig' newspaper/straw garden at my old house. It produced heaps and I was the slackest gardener in the world. No really. I was!

I think people think you're nuts if you do permi gardens as well.. but the bonus is the fish. I love the idea!

Have we convinced you yet?

Yes! :) It was the crazy part that got me..

PS. The irony is I've never even been fishing.... or used a drill (but I think I can, I think I can, I think I can....)

I find reading old posts, is like a book u have to read not want to, then u find nuggets of gold that were missed in an effort to expedite ur learning curve that make it all worth while.... make sense!

Hi GLR, welcome to late nights on this site and an unquenchable thirst for information on AP. And even when you do finally go to bed you then lay there thinking about fish tanks, grow beds, ratios, weights, filters, fish feeding, and heating to name a few. Then it grabs you again when you fall asleep and your dreams are filled with the same.

AP is EVIL. Enjoy the ride!

I think AW summed up what I was thinking, and I havent even started building my system yet. When I started dreaming about buying my first tank I thought I'd really lost it.

Look I gotta tell ya wierd things happen.
But don't tell anyone, K!
I did have a few years when I'd dream about things that I wanted to happen and before I knew it, they happened.
Spooky.
