Gotta love good ole muddy pond culture.

Is that PVC thingy a cage or a grader?

Is the grassy looking stuff aquatic? Or something dragged off the bank while seining (if you seine).

Those are very odd looking fish :D

But look very healthy.

Here's a couple for you JD.... Pond's actually nice and green ...

The mudiness is stirred up by the aerator in the "car", any debris from the drag, and netting the last of the fish... the weed is a pond weed but negligible..

The cage is called a "Car"..... PVC floats... a tarp attached.... one end with a large flap extending down from the opening.... subsequently formed into a flap and closing the opening (as in the photo

It's then submerged.... to form a floating tank...

The cage ("car") is floated behind the "cod" end of the seine net... flap open and down....

The net is floated into the car.... and the flap lifted in front of the cod end... fish pushed toward the car.... flap bar raised and secured ...

106_3419a.jpg [ 147.92 KiB | Viewed 4099 times ]

The net is then removed.... leaving the fish in the car..... net is removed to lessen damage to the fish...

106_3420a.jpg

The car then essentially becomes an enclosed "floating" tank..... preventing escape of the fish, accessability to harvest them and minimal damage from equipment through the process...

An aerator (running off a car battery), is added, along with Clove Oil to anaethesize the fish to reduce handling stress, thrashing around, injury to harvesters....

More when I get home....

Thanks for the photos and explanations. We use a similar setup to your 'car' actually the technical term here is a livecar but we just call it a sock. I will try to post up a pic or two. That pond has a heck of a phytoplankton bloom. I would be tempted to call it blue-green algae. I learn something new here everyday.

Thanks.

JD....Pond culture here, particularly around the North Coast.... It's a considered and accepted practise.... is all about management of blue/green algae bloom.....

I'll write it up some time....

P.S... "livecar" ... same technical term here in Aus as well

Seems rather more labour intensive than throwing in a stick of dynamite,,, but each to their own  :crazy3:
The dynamite also pre tenderises the fish.

Back to reality ,, great pics rupe ,, nice fish there also ,, any idea what stocking rate they run?
