Marcus,

Ensure that, at whatever height you have your pump, that the housing does not end up out of water - you may cook the pump if the housing is exposed for any length of time while the pump is running.

I thought that the float switch turns off the pump if the water level is at a low level and unless installed incorrectly it shuts off before housing is exposed?

Fair point - like I assumed the valve from 'B' wouldn't leak! It doesn't appear to be able to take the pressure! Will try and swap it for a ball/lever type - lucky I am in still in proto-type mode!

Excellent a $13 - 25mm PVC pressure value from Reece Plumbing did the trick! Now just waiting on that growbed!

LKB.....your'e right! In this case, the submersible pump has a mercury switch fitted but not all submersibles do.

While we're talking about submersibles, it's important to note that not all of them are rated for continuous operation. This is particularly important if you are using such a pump for continuous flow......as distinct from flood and drain where the pump cuts in and out at regular intervals.

Maybe paint the whole skylight area white to get as much as possible down to the plants.

Woudn't painting the skylight area white (instead of leaving it clear) mean that light would be reflected away (white reflects) rather than absorb more?

I'm clueless so just asking?

Recent update!

Gravel bed now delivered and installed. I am in the process of flushing out the gravel - refer hose pipe in picture. Still to decide on if I also put gravel on the base of the tank too (see other post - appreciate the deliberations!) and also need to buy a NRV (as suggested in this post).

It will stay like this now for the next couple of weeks until I am back from holiday. Next will be to calibrate (balance?) the pump flow and the grow bed return - so I guess fish in 6 weeks :-) I have decided on silver perch around the 40 mark.

Welcome any thoughts or suggestions!

Far our Marcus, that looks great. There would have to be someone in Melbourne who would share a shipment. Otherwise, I think F&F mentioned the other day a place local to you guys that will have silvers very soon. Good luck with it!
