1/ I edited what I said on the first linelol

2/ I think my reply made it clear I fully understood your comments joel...no misinterpretation here mate....the same as the last 3 replies..not just mine joel...others said similar things

"Now the mention of ANZAC doesn't fill me with pride as it once did years ago... Now I'm only reminded of the complete stupidity, and utter futility of war.

Lest we forget??? I don't think so... More like, "If only we could learn." Remembering is useless if we don't learn from the past."

not wanting to pay respect or acknowledge those that fell is rubbishing them....

anyway...just words on a pc screen...meaningless without the face to face contact

As I say BK, you are misinterpreting what I am trying to say if you think I'm "not wanting to pay respect or acknowledge those that fell".

To glorify the stupidity of war and the politics behind it...

To fail to learn the lessons of such stupidity...

To warp the history and reality of such events in a mangled definition of "patriotism"....

Is also to rubbishing them....

The individual and collective heroicism, ingenuity and tenaciousness of the Anzacs and diggers is not in question.....

The barbarity and rationale of war is..... it's murder.....

Gallipoli, Flanders, Horoshima, Singapore, Vietnam and Iraq are not examples of stirring victories or glorious righteousness.....

But stark reminders of futility.... and so they they should be remembered as such....

And numbnuts that wish to plunge this country into such conflicts should be veremently opposed and condemned..... unless under DIRECT invasion, no-one should be able to commit to acts of war on behalf of the people without the sanctioning of a plebacite.

To do so under pretext of "historical" alliances is baloney.... alliances are only ever formed for political and financial gain.....

And just as the reality show "Survivour" has demonstrated to us... are just as fleeting, meaningless and usually non beneficial.

My point is not to demean the saying "lest we forget". The problem is that we do forget, and we haven't learned. After spending time over there it has a very deep meaning to me.

[Edit] Ummm, yeah, like Rupe says....

I think we need to just settle on the fact that ANZAC day is about remembering and honoring the soldiers which fought and died in wars that had nothing to do with them. Most did not know what they were signing up for or did not have a choice. But in the end they all served for their nations and fought for the common cause.

Its not about whether is was right or wrong, war is not a solution to any problem. It is just a reminder that there were thousands, of Australians, New Zealanders, British, Turkish all came together on the same soil and fought for there nations, and many of them did not return home. Was the Gallipoli Invasion a disaster, as far as removing Turkey from the war, it was a failure. But don't forget that, as long as the ANZAC's held the beach head, Turkish divisions could not be sent elsewhere.

Churchill paid for his mistakes on the Turkish campaign by loosing his leadership... But the soldiers paid with their lives...

So I stand by the phrase... "LEST WE FORGET"

BK,
Quote:
im sure you would be thinkin differently if you fish were talking in german

Care to elaborate on how that might have occurred from WWI?
Copra plantations in Guinea wouldn't be the best kind of staging point for an oversea/land invasion, methinks. It's a long way to the Brisbane line from there.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

As a German I would like to tell you some observations I made on ANZAC day and the differences in German and victorious state(s) attitude(s).

In 2008 I was in Australia and they had a small dawn service in Dalby. Firstly there is nothing better as a dawn or dust service as I was the lucky one and was part of one on mount Sinai.
The experience that a whole bunch of people attended that service with different backgrounds, colours, religions mindsets, etc pp. was breath taking.
There are only very few times were so many people come together: remembrances and drafts.

We don't have anything like it here in Germany. Well as we've started (actually Austria; archduke of Austria was killed in Sarajevo and the German Reich protected Austria and making a point by going to war. And Hitler who was Austrian as well, but no need to be picky as the Germans weren't thinking.) two world wars and lost two of them.

The victorious Entente wrote the history books, twice.

So we don't remember our soldiers, we mostly don't care.

A shame, fighting for your country on behalf of policymakers and just be forgotten.

These memories are so grave that there is now no recognition of German soldiers dying in Afghanistan or other places in the world. Which is very sad. There is now recognition of soldiers in Germany at all. You will be harassed when you are in uniform!

I wanted to be a soldier, I couldn't as I have an allergy against wasps.
I had already signed up for Afghanistan. (I was young and a bit naive, but I did not care much about the consequences)

So keep up the good work and don't forget. As we did.

The problem is that most of us still support war, and all the horrible things that come about from it.

The fact that our main political parties still send our troops to fight in wars that have nothing to do with us and are completely unjust.

So while it is easy to say you are against war, we still vote for those who are for war.

If anyone is looking for a "cause" to support in their life, it should be "anti-war".

But by doing nothing and justifying to ourselves in whatever way, we are in-fact "pro-war"
