what happened to the gunk from the filters?

Chucking it at the moment, or putting it on dirt garden, i cant remember, but there was talk of bottling it and selling it. Not a bad idea actually.

I often wondered about vb's age.............guess we'll have to wait for the national BAP convention, we'll have it at joels place, i'm sure HE will let us look at his fish and maybe even eat one

I'm thinking of holding a national one at my place at the end of the year (if I ever get my system finished). At least an SEQ meet

Eric- sorry dont have pic of it but heres a link describing how to make one out of clear acrylic plastic. I guess he wanted to see the bacteria working. 4 or 6 inch pvc pipe is a whole lot cheaper and easier to work with. And yes the sand particles have greater surface area. Additionally , they are not touching each other and constsntly washed over on all sides by the water. As to the prefilter- The bottom of the tank had 1/2 inch pvc pipelaid out in a grid with 1/16 in or so holes spaced every inch. This was covered with an inch or two of sand and gravel and was connected to the pump intake. When the whole was disassembled the sand was relatively clean, so I assume the solids were somehow broken down. The tank was well populated with snails too, so maybe they had something to do with it. If you deceide to build one I`ll dig out the filter and show you- its around here somewhere.
