Hehe! :)

My grade 5 teacher used to make the whole class sing that song (Pink Floyd) first thing every school morning!

Oh! the irony! Being forced to sing a song with an anti-conformity theme!!

Later he (my teacher) was in trouble with the police over child molestation accusations ... ... but that's another story.

Hey ems one of my mates has just started doing stints (swings) over your way...
Mining gold I think??
Knowing him I'd buy shares in the TAB (horse/dog/donkey/camel betting agency)
Bugger he left it so late to go, with the exchange rate not far from parity
(us$ 94- A$ 100) , though it must be worth the money, cause I think he was on $150K,
3 on 1 off.

tamo hits the mark  know for 150...

jp- As always the do'ers do and so they should they are the chiefs, but the chiefs have to make hard decisions.

LC- to breakfree do you mean live your dream?
Because it is necessary to wakeup from the nightmere first and then
plan your day/week/month/.../life, other wise the universe doesn't know what you want
so therefor cannot provide the stepping stones for you to make the transition
from stuckness into freedom...IMHO only

sorry for the rant, we had a lightning storm here and the puters' motherboard fried...

What is free?

http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=free

When at home we want to be free of parents
When at school we want to be free to earn money
When earning money we want to be free of supervision.
When "free" and living off the land we want to be have no supervision-
be prepared to work your ass off.

Nothing is free. One must make sacrifices and pay the dues.

In 5th grade we had a talent show for the whole elementary school, and Steve Phillips lip synced to that song. It was big hit, so much so that he won, they had him sing it again, all the kids were shouting the chorus, and a riot almost broke out. We all had to go back to class and the principal and one sensitive and tearful teacher lectured us over the intercom and made us feel really bad about it.

Spoiled sports - they should have laughed with the kids. There is a real point to the song - the bullying of teachers - and so they went and showed the same. Way to reenforce the idea!

Nope, but when you reach the point where all you do is work to make someone else money and all you do is eat, then working you ass of in a different way to eat seems like a holiday. Also, doing what you love to do is worth more than any amount of money.

Doing what you are passionate about not only makes you feel that you are doing something worthwhile, but funnily enough the money starts off trickling in and then settles into a steady stream. I made a conscious decision 5 years ago to do only what I am passionate about and at first it seemed a hard slog but I didn't notice because I was enjoying myself so much. To my absolute amazement the financial rewards followed soon thereafter. Your enthusiasm and zest for what you are doing is infectious and people notice it. Success breeds success.

Absolutely correct. When you love what you are doing - you do it very well.

The hardest thing to do is let go in my opinion. Those around you will tell you that you are throwing your life away, that you are being a radical, that you have a good job and you should be thankful.

Most people aspire to be safe. If you are going to be free, you are going to have to learn to handle not being safe. But really, how safe is it in the job you are in?

This was something that helped me break free. I realized that at any time, through no fault of mine, a company could decide they didn't need my services anymore. And, since I wasn't privy to their decisions - I might never see it coming. So, the safe route to me isn't nearly as safe as having my own destiny in my own hands. After all, I know how well we are doing.

You break free when you realize it is no less secure, in fact might be more so, than being stuck in a corporate rut.

Two things make me hesitate: health care and retirement. Also the kid(s). If it were just the two of us we'd be bungie jumping and living out of tents on the back of Harleys.

Yeah, health care is my biggest leash. When the husband has major medical needs already, and then the cat and the kid prove that they can rack up $10K in hospital bills without violence or blood, you realize you have to have it.

(Cat walked across kid's wrist, and broke the skin with her hind claw. No blood. I didn't even realize the skin had been broken. One little bacteria entered the kid's bloodstream, and a couple weeks later, voila, blood-born bacterial infection.)

Thank goodness we have Medicare and Health Care Cards over here!

I can't imagine what we would have done if we lived in the America. DH's bills would be astronomical!

What do they do if you can't pay Dr and hospital bills? Just refuse to treat you?

I always planed to move right out into the bush but now see that we are going to be tethered to areas with good health care. Unfortunately property in these areas will cost more so we need more $$ to buy.... LoomingCactus I know how you feel.
