This reminds me of the $800 hydroponic systems that consist of a painted rubbermade tub and 4 painted pvc pipes with a fountain pump and $20 of nutrients. So not worth it. If it came with everything including the $300 china greenhouse then it might be ok.

I've been hung up on tiki culture lately was reading about this guy and his tiki drink recipe books from the original bars. Maybe if you have some rum around you could mix something special up tonight? :smile:

Has anyone heard of ecocityfarm? It was on the New Inventors about a year and a half ago and was the reason I got interested in AP. They are an Australian set up over east and are at the point of going commercial with the view to franchising.

Must say I have had fun setting up my own system, don't know that I would want to go their way afterall but it does come with complete customer support - all computer linked to their network and they let you know what to do to iron out the bugs. I you haven't seen it, it is worth looking at. They are envisaging them set up in shopping centres for direct selling to the public but also have a view to set them up in less developed cultures where they can supply good quality food without having the environmental footprint that farming has.

Seemore, there is a big discussion about Ecocity, most likely in general banter, sorry no time to search right now

Thanks Jaymie, that discussion was regarding soldier fly larvae. The ecocityfarm is supposed to have been listed on the ASSOB - Australian Small Scale Offering Board on April 2nd this year and more progress is supposed to be forthcoming from there.

I saw this latest Tube about "Portable Farms", the business;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX-2YmVj ... r_embedded

Phyllis Davis describes very briefly how their latest system works.

Sounds like they are using a geyser pump 2x a day, into a settling tank, flowing by gravity into the growbed, which drains into the fish tank by way of a special custom device in the growbed.

Could the "device" in the growbed be as simple as a siphon?

The growbeds are only 5 inches deep and are flooded and drained 2x a day.

How about a reality check? Anyone?

*grins* Don't you want the bugs to be live rather than squsihed flat?

OK... I'll go now...

One thing that does come to mind though was when I was looking at the idea of BSH production (can't seem to find much about them for Victoria - does anyone know if they can be found here?) and there was a distinct size limit for the breeding area. My impression was the Edo version doesn't have enough room. It was in a paper looking at how to breed, temps, moisture etc. and IIRC the adults don't lay unless there is a certain amount of space.

But maybe if temp etc is ideal then the space isn't so important?
