Well at least 4% of it goes to education anyway. (40% to the war)

Well Dave, if they spent as much on education as they did on the war, think of how much better educated the soldiers would be, and how much of a waste of money it would be when they were killed, all that education -gone to waste. ;)

We are in a recession. The top 5 ways to tell:
#5 My daughter works in a large office building in downtown Boston near the T. She used to wait in line at Starbucks for a morning coffee. The line is non-existent during the "rush hour".
#4 My community has 200 homes in it, 3 are in foreclosure and 20 are for sale. During the previous 25 years only 1 was foreclosed.
#3 Real estate ads for new homes that the offer up to 1/3 off.
#2 Good paying jobs are scarce. My neighbor is in the building trades but I see him at home during the day. Large firms are laying off.
#1 Americans are clipping coupons. For years the average citizen just ignores the coupons, but not today. Even eating out is done with a coupon. And south FL is where women brag that their stoves are virgins!
Hold on to your hats and buckle your seat belt, the ride has just begun!

I hear a lot of people complaining that they are spending a large part of their income on only food and Gas. In fact more and more people are no longer driving to town often they wait till they have many things to do and even take time to plan the trip so they do no extra driving. If time were not getting lean these thing would not be an issue.

Food and gas are both fossil fuel-ed. (i.e. fertilizers and transportation)

I hate the idea of national sales tax. It makes me a federal tax collector when I sell something on ebay or side of the road and I can imagine the fines for messing with that! At least I can opt opt of this current system if I want (teamlaw) It would be hard as ell to get walmart to file non-standard paperwork.

Do you really think they can tax garage/ tag sales? If you are not a heavy consumer, you could beat the system. The retail system would flounder. Auto sales would fall further and housing? We would have to change our more is better attitude.

When I see the taxes on my cable bill, phone bill and internet hook up I cringe now. We always suggest to reduce energy consumption before going to solar panels. The government should reduce tax consumption before changing the tax structure.

When we moved to FL, which doesn't have a state income tax, I figured we were saving $5-7 K a year in taxes. So how much more could we save if we didn't have a FED Income tax. I just feel sorry for the states that have an income tax that effectively says, calculate you fed taxes, and then send us a percentage.

You really should watch this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 4360427692

Before supporting a change to tax law! I do not earn income and I doubt you do either.

But the problems is that government does not obey law in US because its trained citizens will not stand up for what is right and just when they are called to be on a jury. They would rather others not get a ways with what they they feel they must do. Then they say its their patriotic duty to pay.

CityFish, was that a response about the fairtax idea? If so, the fairtax is only on retail sales. Garage sales and such are selling used items. No taxes. The price of things wouldn't change, the method of tax payment would. It's not a tax savings, just a MUCH simpler way of paying taxes. What the government does with those taxes is an entirely different issue, and an even harder one to address.

DanDMan, yes, if you are selling retail items, you'd have to pass the taxes on to the state, which would then pass it on to the feds.

If you don't want to pay a Federal Sales Tax, barter for what you need. I like the idea--it would simplify my life a lot.
