And yeah the "Mushrooms" and "Re : Mushrooms" thread thing had me scratching my head as well

While I was a missionary in Ghana West Africa, I started a mushroom farm, we grew Oyster Mushrooms using sawdust, rice bran, lime, and water. I was very prosperous, I put together a handbook that we used as a training manual, if anyone is interested I will send it to you as an MSWord Attachment.

For a suitable "mushroom" for aquaponics try googling rungia klossii. Very tasty and goes well in salads instead of normal mushrooms. Very easy to grow. Doesn't go as well with steaks as large field mushrooms - but nothing is perfect.

One thing I like about mushrooms is that they have a pretty high protein content.
I did a bit of reading about trying to grow my own mushrooms and decided the process had too many things that needed to be tightly controlled. Sterilization is an important part of getting most of it started if trying to culture one's own.

I kinda let the idea fall by the wayside since there is a mushroom farm down the road and we can get mushrooms really cheap directly from them.

We also get mushroom compost for the garden really cheap right from them. They steam pasteurize it before and after their growing process so it doesn't seem very good for producing more mushrooms after they sell it.

Thats right, you wouldn`t believe the lengths that commercial producers go to keep things sterile. When a shed has finished producing all the compost is removed and everything is cleaned meticulously. Then some poor soul goes in there wearing a gas mask (Darth Vader ish) with a pressure washer to sterilise everything.
We used to use a dilute mixture of formaldehyde and kelthane..which makes your eyes smart a bit even with a gas mask on

G'day, I'ld love a copy of that manual if anyone wants to send me one .

I've been growing several species of mushrooms-some amazingly easy. My neighbours are setting up an aquaponic system (I rent), so I'm looking forward to intergrating our operations.

I currently see the easiest linkage between the two is using the spent mushroom substrate to grow food for the aquaponic system. That is, my spent mushroom substrate, which is organic, can be fed directly to yabbies, or worms, snails, various insect larvae...which are then fed to fish.

Some mushrooms love Nitrogenous wastes, so there's definitely potential for using filtration waste to grow mushrooms.
