2ppt OK? Or should I go 4?

I got the Home Brand cooking salt because the Iaxa one had "Anti-caking agents". Non-iodised of course.

Well I put 4kg in roughly 1400L of water. The other fish look OK, but it was too late for the one in the picture above. My first casualty! I killed a gold fish.

What is the water supposed to smell like? Mine sometimes smells like fish, sometimes has no odour. Is the fish smell indicative of an unhealthy system?

This morning clean creek smell, last night, fish smell. It seems to come and go. If I smell the water and it's fishy, I don't feed them.

It could also be the time I come along and have a sniff - because it's a 15min on, 45min off system, if I come when it's been off for 44min maybe that's when it's smelling fishy.... or maybe the water in the sump is what smells fishy...I dunno.

:sign5: - you need to give your system a mouthwash solution

think you may be in the right area with the timing issue tho - I run continuous pump and my system smell has remained constant, kinda pleasant creeky smell :D

Update:

I have stuck a reflective sheet to the fence to reflect some light back down on the plants (I love rare earth magnets).

The water is beautiful and clear, here is a pic of my goldfish eating worms:

But I'm still having bacterial problems - note the blood on the dorsal (please don't tell me it's ICH):

I removed him from the others and dosed up with another kg of salt last night - now i NEED a salinity refractometer....

Ordered trout, but he's trying to sort out a way to get it to me. So it could be another week or two.

The water is crystal clear, levels seem fine, why do you think I have recurring bacterial problems?

Gem I have marron in my tank and I notice a fishy smell after a bit of rain, but this clears and then doesn't really smell like anything, water looks a bit off color at the moment, but if I get a jar of water from near bottom or top, the water is clear, I think the murky look comes from the crap on the bottom, but have put in some freshwater mussels so see how this goes for cleaning things up

yep, got mine from ebay a few weeks ago, $35 landed.

they're very accurate as the use the refraction degrees due to increase in sg as the measurement...............

there is a screw for initial calibration with RO/DI water.
