I've recently put two PVC pipes in one of my indoor aquariums to give the warring perch hiding spots. Its working ok, but makes my tank look ugly. I was thinking of cutting down a hessian sack and wrapping it around the PVC pipe. Does anyone know if there is any nasty treatment of hessian? Now that i think of it where would i even get a hessian sack  its not like our spuds come in them anymore

You could try an army surplus supply store for a camouflage net - second thoughts that's probably treated with a fire retardant :cussing:

would something like a piece of shade cloth work or fibreglass fly wire to break up the silhouette?

I have soaked it before and the water turned a yellowish brown colour... but not sure as to the safety of it all re your fish... it is supposed to be a 'natural' fiber though.
I still like the smaell of it, reminds me of day on the farm as a kid :D

All of the ideas so far are good, but if it's aesthetics you are concerned about why not get rid of the pvc altogether and use something else to make a structure for them?

My mate's tank has some beautiful flat riverstones which he has positioned to make some tunnels and alcoves for the fish to hide in. Can be a bit harder to source I guess but the end result looks fantastic. I'll get a pic if I remember...

Get some slate tiles (seconds, broken ones etc) from the tile joint and make some structures from them.
