OK, this mornings update:

I installed the driver, it looks like it's playing now but still no sound. Seems to be back where we started. No system noises anymore. had them before I re-installed the driver though. Not through the speakers, just from the box.

Everything looks good when I go through control panel, it only has one option and it's showing the right thing so I think it's OK in there.

OK SG.... for the moment we'll assume no virii or spyware...... do you have protection installed??

Go "Start" ... "Control Panel"... "sounds and Audio Devices"....

Select the "Sound" tab and check to see if there's a "sound scheme" installed... if not use the arrow and select "Windows Default"....

If it asked to save the previous.... say no..... apply...

Select "Audio" and use the drop down box to select and apply the Realtek device for both sound playback and sound recording.... check your "volumes".... slide them all the way up....

Select the "volume" tab and check that there is nothing in the "Mute" selection box.... apply and exit...

Let me know what this does....

Hi Rupe,

I've got anti-virus & anti-spyware and fire wall all installed and working properly. :) Was the first thing I did when I got it.

And now for the sound update..... It works! I just turned it on and it worked without me doing anything else to it. Does that make any sense at all???

It's been rebooted multiple times since it stopped working (including three times today) so I don't know why it just decided to work now.

We always look at the Tech things when the simple things are generally the problem, in my years of experience and few several versions of windows.... the main cause of no sound is with the PC volume control, (can be found near clock or in accessories> entertainment>) sometimes for no reason the mute all button checks and checks by itself, but generally settles after 1 or 2 times, I have only had time to read the end of this thread so hope this wasn't discussed earlier, cheers

Reckon a couple of reboots, with the driver re-installation in between, might have done the trick.... I'll take it anyway

Hi Nocky,

Thanks, I did try those things first, I thought it might have been something simple like that but it all looked normal.

Thanks Rupe,

I'm sure that must have been it. It works so I'm happy. :D

anyone know how to change the default browser back to IE. I never chose firefox as my default - it just happened one day. I like it - but I still use IE for many things and it shits me that it has also disappeared from my start menu. I'm pretty crap with computers.

VB, choosing firefox as default shouldt have removed IE from the start menu!

anyway, get into IE and choose this option (default web browser)

if you cant find IE then here is the location

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
