The case on my work Mac will go nuts if you try to run it without the sides on - there is a switch that tells the computer and the fans will run at full blast. Check out a G5 aluminum tower case sometime, there are acrylic forms in there to direct the flow.

I have a clear acrylic window and blue cold-cathode lights and fans...

So I can check out what is going on inside without having to take the panels off....

This is one of the two G5s of the liquid-cooled quad G5 towers. The previous air-cooled ones had nine fans in the tower case. Intel quad cores like my current one don't require this amount of cooling paraphernalia.

Only 6 fans and a heatpipe setup to cool the thing... CPU (FX60) running at 400Mhz above spec.. Brings it to a comfortable 3.0Ghz with stock HSF.

My old computer is lying around in parts on a plank, that's how I usually run it. The CPU heatsink is about the same size as DD's, but I'm running it passively. I had plans for making a chainmaille computer case, but then I realised that it'd probably short the computer if it touched anything. :(

I have a laptop now. Haven't figured out how to take the side off of that though.
