hey all I am looking to buy a glass fish tank as described above, I am really only looking for the tank and no accessories.

Looking to pay les than $150, so if you have one or now of someone who has one and is looking to sell I wouls be happy to hear from them,

i bought a 4x2x2 (10mm)for $200 and it was the bargain of the century

you'll be able to find a standard height 4 ft on ebay quite cheap though, have picked them up ranging from $50 to $100

thanks steve thought I might of been pushing the proverbial up hill, but I have faith in the aquaponics community and thought i would give it a try,

Why not see someone who deals in glass and ask them to cut one up to size, then you can make one yourself, all you will need is aquarium grade silicon.

I know the caboolture markets has a guy that sells really cheap fish tanks. he buys all the broken sheets from G.James and cuts them up himself. he had a 6ft tank up there for $150 a few weeks ago. I'm sure there are a lot of people that do it at other markets but I know for sure the caboolture markets has them...

It is possible that I got a bad batch - but the tanks I got from the Caboolture Markets guy were not so good. Some leak and others look like they are likely to in the future. Some of the pieces that hold the lids in place are also not joined properly. On top of that the glass is chipped in some areas and sharp in others. As I say - may be a bad batch and I'm certainly not defaming the guy, but I would not put one of these tanks inside for fear of coming home to a flooded house (and these are only 50 litre jobs).

I did ring and tell him and it was suggested taht I may want to bung some extra silicone on (didn't realise this was my job though).

get what ya pay for... what's $5 worth of silicon when you get the tank for that cheap. I think fish tanks are a rip off, glass isn't that expensive. What about using laminated glass for tanks? I say build it yourself nick, just a couple of hours work and you'll save yourself a few hundred dollars.

This is not true for me, sorry zombie but the glass is bloody expensive when you buy just enough for a tank compared to industrialy made tanks.

Laminated glass can be used but you got to be really good at glass cutting because you have to cut the different panels one after the other and then cut the plastic layer. I've seen it done by a pro and it is not what i would call an easy job.

But you could probably find a broken tank and change the panel yourself, i've done it and it is really cheap because you usually get the tank for free, just have to unglue all the joints and clean the panels and reglue it. Don't just change the panel because you will have leaks in the silicon. It will take a few hours but will cost the price of the silicon and the replacement panel.

Gotta disagree with that one. Why can't they just do a proper job in the first place. Is just shoddy workmanship.

tell that to the 8 year olds in china making 90% of our household items...
but yeah it would be nice if they put the effort in, they'd be able to charge more for their products at least.
