Thanks... I was hoping I'd find they would survive and maybe just not grow as fast in slightly cooler temps. Most excellent.

I just talked with someone from Morning Star Fishermen about their blue tilapia. For those of us Floridians that want tilapia but can't get the aquaculturist permit, blue tilapia are the way to go and Morning Star will sell them. They are not set up to ship so one would need to make the trip with some sort of hauling set up with air. They would like a couple days notice so make an appointment with them before showing up (their real thing is the mission and their training seminars, I doubt they sell live fish to people off the street.) Prices don't seem to bad.
small unsexed fingerlings $0.50 each
All male fingerlings $1.00 each
Breeders $5.00 each

Sounds pretty good to me if one can't get lucky netting out of a local pond.

I spent some time talking to Miami-Aquaculture and the State. I spoke to Fish and Wildlife Conservation. They said no permit was required if we are purchasing for our own use. Since we don't qualify for aquaculture permits we aren't governed by the Ag Department. I shared that info with Dan at M-A and he said that he would discuss this further. I provided him with phone numbers and names. Dan said that this related to Tilapia Raia(?) only. I am not certain of the differences. M-As location is about 6 mile north of my home. I would be glad to follow up on this.

TC, Linda,

Do either of you know anything about Mike Sipes, his breeders, his hybrids? (Cherry Snapper Website)

Does anyone know, roughly, how long the females will lay eggs? or how many?

Thanks,

Jim

CityFish,
That is interesting. The only things I've found about Tilapia in Florida is that it is not legal to be in possesion of a live tilapia in Florida without a permit excpet for Blue Tilapia. As in, if you are out fishing and you catch a tilapia that you want to take home and eat, you must kill it (put it on ice) so that you are not transporting a live tilapia. (Except Blue Tilapia). Of course the info I've gotten if off the internet so must be taken with the salt shaker.

Mornings,
The only things I know about Cherry Snapper is what I've read on the web site.

All of this may seem somewhat difficult to grasp, because what I am saying is that the newly created fish at the time when it is first swimming has not become either sex and the amount of either testosterone or estrogen in its bloodstream will influence whether it produces ovaries or testicles and therefore whether it will be male or female.

So.. Why not throw in one of the wifes birth control pills when they are still fry? Its estrogen...

No, I dont know anything about Cherry Snapper. I do have mossambica and hornorum. My problem is I cant tell which are male and which are females, so I am kinda stuck. I need to separate the male hornorum and female mossambica and remove the rest into the grow out tank. So, if any of you just happen to be passing through east Texas and are really good and looking at fish privets, let me know!

Is this pic intensive or what?

Was the pic a "set up"?

http://rps.uvi.edu/AES/Aquaculture/fish.html

I have been raising in "Tiny" tubs in my backyard a few wild type Tilapia ... (Mozambiques) ..

I have noticed that my recent fry have grown up a little and are showing a lot more RED colouration than is normal, especially around the head and face. Like the males are blushing ...

I am thinking that perhaps I should try to selectively breed these red - pink mutations..

Wild type are ugly, but beautiful depending on your preference... (I like the black - red contrast!)

These particular males have a very pink / red head!

I will try and photograph within the next week or so...

Hmmm ... to breed or not to breed, that is the question!

J7... I have noticed a similar thing on some of my offspring... The bigs babies that I have at them moment have a red colouration above their eyes. It is only very small though...

I want to try and get hold of some pink ones to try interbreeding the wild ones with...

The problem with breeding is that anyone that wants any needs to put dibs on them 6-8 weeks before picking them up... LOL!

Amuses me this crud,,, there is NO shortage of fuel,,, well not for the next hundred years.

What has REALLY happened is that our American cousins have hedged against their falling dollar , by , buying fuel,..... yes they once again want us to pay the price of their economic problems. It's a big con job.

have a read here .....,http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/feature_articles/2004/worldoilsupply/oilsupply04.html

Now that's JUST crude oil ..... Northern NSW and Southern Queensland Australia have enough "shale oil" that is reasonably easily converted to Diesel , to supply the world at current consumption rates for some 100 years.
It comes down to simple economics ,, once crude gets tooooo expensive then alternatives become relatively cheap.
The worry is ,, we still burn , we still pollute and we still have to breath.

Also ,, I'd like to put an addendum to my previous post .....
The USA has paid MORE than it's fair share of costs in it's attempts to keep a relatively free and just world,,, I do very much believe that this cost should be more evenly distributed amongst the nations ,, especially Europe.
