Slugs and snails can sometimes munch on the root of root vegies like carrots, turnips and similar.

Hello APers,

Just thought I'd drop in and say my system is going strong. Have had many crops of beans, snow peas and other vegies out of the 0.9 sq. mtr. gravel beds now. Gudgeon are happy. They have not showed any signs of discomfort. In 9+ months they have guts'd their way through $4.50 worth of fish food (Ridley's No.2, tea spoon a day). Have been adding pinch of volcanic dust (Min +) each day. One single pump fills beds every 15 minutes and they drain for next 15 minutes 24/7. Air stone goes 24/7. I have removed the guttering on my house and rain water can drip straight in - seems to keep system topped up (occasionally overflows gently through a small saw cut in the rim), although I had to add a bucket of water every couple of days in the dry period a few months ago. This system was started on the microculture found in local creek weed (one small bag taken and added to initial water) and has not looked back. As Joel's book mentioned, the system built up a bit of muck in the beginning but everything cleared up one day and now the water is never cloudy, ever. I threw a oyster shell in ages ago and I can still see it on the bottom. This system does not produce eating fish but does produce crops at a fantastic rate, and at almost zero cost - I always let some crops go to seed and resew. I feel I am close to being ready for system 2. Buried fish ponds with eating fish...massive quantities of food crops...completely grid free power,...soon, soon.

There seems to be 43.5k worth of new posts to read through since my last post. Aggghhhhhhhh. Good on you all for sharing all your experiences and making AP something that will make the world a better place.

Didjeridu67 out.
