Possibility that you have onboard sound SG.... probably a "Realtek" chip...

Windows Automatic Update may have downloaded and installed a C-Media driver update.... which doesn't work with some Realtek chips... although C-Media use realtek chips on their own products...

Any chance that you've done/had an automatic update???

If so... or if you want to try it anyway...... goto "start" ... right click "my computer" and select "properties" ....

Select the "hardware" tab.... then "device manager" ... expand your "sound, video and game controllers" .... locate the sound chip...

Suspect you'll see "C-Media Audio".... listed.... right click it and select "properties"......

Select "driver".... then click "roll back driver" and click OK......

Reboot your system and see how you go.....

If it's all good then PM me and I'll tell you what to watch for and how to permanently decline the C-Media auto-update if it comes around again....

I said please when I was asking it to work again. It didn't work though.

I hope the sound card hasn't died, I've got a warranty but I have to take it back to where it came from. Don't really want to drive all that way again.

I was hoping it might be my speakers that had died (they're old) but I unplugged them and tried to get it to make the normal windows sounds without them and I still couldn't get any sound. :(

Hi Rupe,

Somehow I didn't see your msg earlier, sorry.

Thanks for your help. :)

Yes it's a Realtek chip (Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controllers if that helps) when I tried to roll the driver back it came up with a msg saying there are no back up drivers for this devise. It offers to open the trouble shooting thing but I can't get anywhere with that. :(

I can't see C-Media Audio listed anywhere. Is that good?

What should I try with it next?

OK ... SG.... deliberately run the Windows Update service... goto Start... All Programs... it's near the top....

There is some known conflicts between Via chipsets and Realtek in some circumstances..... when you run the windows update.... select "Custom"...

I would expect you to see... other than the critical updates which have been preselected.... possible two updates under the "Hardware" section....

Select them.... one will probably be a "Via" update and the other a "Realtek" update..... add them to the install... download and install...

Then reboot..... quick question.... is this a new laptop?????

Nope, it's not a laptop.

It's a 2nd hand box and I've put the rest of it together from bits I already had.

I'll try what you said and be back in a min. :)

OK, done. I could only see the Via update though.

Just did a test run and I now get an error msg when I try to stream radio saying:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

Guess thats what you were expecting?

I also noticed there are 10 software updates, should I get those too a bit later? (I've never been able to get the updates before on the old computer)

Did you cancel out of the rollback in the previous step when it said you had no backup drivers???

Tried to, now it says I have no drivers installed and it wont let me roll back either.

The main box is now making the normal error beep though.

Any idea what it's up too now?

I've found it's driver on the Realtek site. :)

Will downloading that solve the problem?

We had a machine get a virus here at the office that caused the sound to fail. Even after installing a new sound card the sound was not selectable.

Check this: start > control panel
sound,speech, and Audio Devices
Sounds and Audio Device
Select Audio Tab
See what is under Default sound device
is it ghosted?
You can click on sounds tab and select a sound and press the play button to see if the OS can make sound

Plug some head phones into the audio out also to double check.
