Guys

I don't want to feel like I need to defend my decision to buy a Stihl and I decided to stick with a brand I am familiar with. We often pay for the brand, shoes, cars, computers, etc and we could argue all day on pros and cons. I also spend a lot of time on a woodwork forum because I am interested in chainsaw mills. The shop fitted a standard chain and I didn't ask for the specs, I will eventually get a skip chain when I get the mill. I was also happy with the half hour or more product handover session and have full confidence in them and their service.

Back on track, I'm out west this weekend and have just setup her (Uptowne Aquaponics) system. Apart from a minor leak, things are going well and we put in some seedlings and dosed up with Thrive because the fish won't come for another three weeks. We'll then stop the artificial feeding and rely on the fish.

cheers
Derek
Hope you dident use thrive[ask murray and others ] its poison to fish i would stop using it straight away and go on ot seasol and hope theres no residue when you get ready for fish try with 1 gold fish

Here's the new system my brother (derekh) made me. We have planted corn (although not healthy looking from the start), mini cabbage, beefsteak tomatoes and celery - all from punnets and then some zucchini seeds. Derek added a couple of worms into the gravel - left over from an unsuccessful fishing trip. We've just used Thrive in the bathtub water so far and I'll add the fish when I come home from a work trip in about 3 weeks time. We'll start with gold fish and then I hope to eventually have yellow belly.
I'm hoping this will encourage me to be a more productive gardener as I'm not really into weeding and all that. Bought a rotary hoe a couple of years back off someone who only had it sitting in their shed for years - now it's been sitting in my shed for years! If I'm lucky, I'll be able to feed off my brothers' motivation and make a real go of it. I live on a small block (5 acres in town), which is where we've got my new aquaponic system.
Many thanks to Derek.
So, here goes!

very nice Uptowne, just one thing. As has been noted in the other thread about this, please stop using the Thrive straight away. There is something in it that is fatal to fish. We're not sure which ingredient and how long it stays in the system. So to avoid heartbreak in three weeks time, stop using it now :)

Welcome to the forum! It's great to have families sharing the joy of aquaponics :D

Hi again,
Yes, I just read the other comments about the Thrive. I'll get my sister to get some Seasol for me in Roma today and bring it home. Not too late to make changes I would think as it is only Day 2. Derek is on his block playing with the chainsaw at the moment but will talk to him when he comes back later.
Thanks for that.

Yep, caan't remember what the problem with Thrive was... other than it killed fish.... may have been Copper content.....

Certainly "Aquasol" has a copper content that would be fatal to fish as well... so another one to avoid.

Seasol and Maxicrop have proven to be safe for use

I'll jump to my defence again. I added Thrive to Uptownes system because it was the only stuff available and it's a 120 km round trip to the hardware store for Seasol. We won't add fish 'till mid April and will probably do a water change then. We did get a bottle of Seasol today when youngest sister went to Roma and have now added a splash of that.

I was at Murray's the day he lost most of fish from a dose of Thrive. I have also used Thrive in my system during startup and when I only had goldfish. I don't use it or need it now that I have 80 SP and Seasol on hand that I use as a foliar spray.

I agree that I wouldn't recommend the use of Thrive but sometimes one has to make concessions.

cheers
Derek

p.s. The chainsaw worked wonderfully today, all toes and fingers in tack.
