An update while I have few minutes,

Most of the GP that we recived from aquablue have died. I did manage to get ten or so transferred into the system outside with the fish from Ausyfish so am not sure of their status (small fish deep tank), I do know that there is definetly some still alive as these don't seem to hide when I show up. There are two still left in the aquarium that I have missed (might leave them there), they seem to be healthy enough but not growing anywhere near as quick as the Silvers.

The GPs from Ausyfish are doing really well, from the brief glimpses I have had before they bolt for cover, I would say they have doubled in size. They were 30mm or so when I got them.

The silvers that we recieved from aquablue that I put in the aquarium have still not been moved outside, though they are well and truelly ready to do so, they now range in size from 40mm to 80mm. This is mainly due to the heatwave we are going through here, I haven't got the grow beds organised as yet.

Unfortunately the other half has started naming the Silvers in the aquarium, at least one of them is now called sushi

H

That is okay Himzol, it means that everyone knows their status and won't be afraid to eat them when the time is right. If it was named Nemo for example it probably could never end up on the plate. So in the scheme of things I think the other half is on the right track.

I'd still have at least a dozen GP left, maybe more but they are difficult to count swimming around with the SP. Some of them are still very small. I have noted a few things in my experience, none of which are rocket science but important to note:
1. bigger fish might be more expensive but are more likely to be feeding on pellets and less likely to die
2. the fish feed better in warmer water. Adelaide had a mostly mild summer and my water temp was sitting on around 18C until the recent hot spell when the water was 24-25 and the fish were eating a hell of alot more
3. if you cant get live food then they will happily take very fine shavings of meat (eg a frozen heart run over a very fine grater.)
4. deal with a reputable hatchery wo will provide after-sales service.

Good to hear KEII as I'm looking to probably use them very soon myself.

Rupertofoz - Just thought I'd mention another supply option for you:

'Shoalhaven Fish and Yabbies' at Wandandian are reasonably close to your neck of the woods. I got 50 Silver Perch from the owner Wayne for $1 each and he rounded up to 55 to cover any potential losses (I haven't had any so far) and he threw in some fingerling feed. Wayne does not hatch himself but if you do a pick up from him at least you avoid the transport risks and cost. He had Golden Perch when I was last there and I have had yabbies in the past too.

Cheers

Phil

Yep, Status Quo...
no more deaths, though the ones outside seem to be growing quicker than the two left in aquarium. I just think they aren't getting to the food as quick as the silvers.

Tha tan tans have also doubled in size as well...

I had a close look at my fish, SP and GP together, I cant see too many GP's left, perhaps one or two
Experiment = failure. It might have worked if I had got larger fingerlings, Aquaculture Advantage had some just after I had got mine from Aquablue and now I wish I had taken them.

SP are doing well though, and will be getting some trout on Saturday.

How's yours Himzo?

Hi KEXIV,

You might remember I ordered some SP from the same supplier at about the same time as you did. 70%-100% of them didn't make it - I think they were just too small. I've yet to have a fatality from my subsequent order of larger SP fingerlings.

Same here, though I think if you got some that are bigger than the ones we got, and early enough to build up some fat before the winter, then you would have a chance of getting them to grow out to a reasonable size.

I'm definetly going to try again later when I've finished all the renos and the house rebuild.

Himzo.
