You could always buy a expensive RO/DI system to filter your water first

Would definately do the job.

I asked the nano reef guy across the hall yesterday what he does and he has an RO/DI machine to do it. What a Nerd! I like the "Tang(tm) Solution" better!

No you use Tangs (Dory from Finding Nemo fame) to eat up excess vegetative matter in your system not to clean the water
Besides a nano system (less than 20 gallons, less than 75 liter)doesn't take huge quantities of water to top off or make water changes.

gee, my top up is 200L! I have two drums that get used in turn. Mostly they only get to age for about a day or so. They get siphoned into the big grow bed.

Have a similar system Jaymie only my problem was with pH...tank water measures 6.0 (or worse). I was having pH issues where it kept drifting down towards ~6.4...solution was to add a bubbler and some shellgrit to a couple of topup barrels. (before anyone asks the obvious - Yes!, there is shellgrit in the main system also  :D )

Water pH added to the system is now 6.8 or better and pH in system remains steady around 7.2
