That is inspiring Dan!

In your measurements, do you quote the top and bottom as circumference, diameter or what?

Its stated above, the bottom is 1.5 inches diameter. The tops is 4.75 inches diameter and its 18 inches long. I am not sure of the flow rate because I cant remember the flow rate of the fountain pump I used.

[quote="DanDMan"] I think it would have been more easy to use a thinner (.0625 - .03125 inch) sheet of PVC becasue it can be overlapped and glued in place; leaving the top and bottom as the difficult parts to attach.

How about fitting them into pre-existing fittings at top and bottom a little pvc glue and silicone and you are ready to rock and roll.

Not a bad idea badfish! In fact, thats a damn good idea! that would eliminate the need for special tools and make it easy to plumb in.

Well I think my sand filter is starting to kick in now (2 weeks)!

The nitrites went from .25 to off the chart in one day! I did a 50% water change to get the nitrites back down to around 1...

I am also noticing some foam floating on the water now. Is that protein?

Yep thats probably correct, protien and other good stuff locked up in the foam.
Uereka! youve invented the protien skimmer

Nitrates have not taken off yet. Nitrites are loading up fast! Ammonia is 0.
If I leave the nitrite level kind of high will that help the bacteria that convert to nitrate get started faster?

Perhaps a trip through a sand bed and then down a water fall making air bubbles is a new way of protein skimming.. Now I just need to add a chamber that add the bubbles and captures the foam.

Well, this holding tank is cycled, but the bio-filtration can not handle the ammonia from a proper feeding, so I added the FSB to it.

The trip down the waterfall making air bubbles is a protien skimmer of sorts. Probably not a very effective one but one all the same.

Protien skimmers are fairly easy to make but tough to tune to work extremely effectively. All you need is a way to introduce a steady stream of fine bubbles into a column of water allowing the cleaned water to leave and the foam to go to a collection point. A piece of pvc pipe

Here is a good article on the basics of counter current skimming and how to determine skimmer needs
http://www.hawkfish.org/snailman/skimmer101.htm the diy site on this site is nice also use the link at the top of the page.
