Awesome, I'm going to google that and see if I can find the study...

That one in the pic is a nice one too, check the chelipeds (claws) on it, they'd definitely draw blood!

hey simmo, what r u using for hides? i am building an ibc setup and want to put yabbies or marron in the sump.

I thought of putting pvc pipe offcuts in as hides, using small diameter at the bottom and large at the top. asthey grow they will be forced to the top for harvest.

what do u reckon?

Checked on the yabbies - they all seem fine. I even gave them some food. Tiny and larger yabbs all seem to be living in reasonable harmony.

Forgot to say - I pulled the largest one out to see if I'd eradicated the parasites with that salt bath I gave them before putting them in the aquarium. It had no moving parasites, but appeared to still have some eggs on it. Given the time since the bath - I expect that these are not eggs that are going to hatch. It looks like the single salt bath was sufficient.

Duckpond, I reckon that would work fine mate, I use PVC offcuts of sizes ranging from 20mm to 90mm in the bottom of the IBC, and gravel on the bottom for them to forage in and to avoid tail blisters from the tail rubbing on the plastic. The more hides the better really - would be a good experiment to see if they do relocate up the larger ones as time goes on... Have fun!

VB - thats good to know mate, keep us posted and let us know if you do see a resurgence of temno in the future, which might indicate that some of the eggs survived...

Last week, when I picked up the redclaw from a friend's place I looked closely at his tanks for the redclaw. (well, not his tanks, they are housesitting, so he's doing stock control ;) )

The breeding pair are in an aquarium in the laundry, but all the kids are out in outdoor ponds. The kids are all in kiddie pools about 30cm deep with no covers over them at all. There are aerators and pumps and all the usual accessories, rocks, pipes etc. And the redclaw DO NOT escape.

Apparently, when the ponds are clear, the beasties go wandering, but when the water is covered with duckweed, they stay home. The redclaw seem to get tricked into thinking there is a roof and they stay put.

Oh yeah, Big Blue moulted on the weekend and so is larger than before! about 25cm now.

What's your pH Jaymie....

Yabbies, Marron etc need calcium to harden the shells and assist moulting..... ie Calcium Carbonate or shell grit

Rupe, I have no idea what my pH is! You know I don't have a test kit!

Anyway, Big Blue doesn't live here, he lives in town at my friend's place. :D being a broodstock beast.

But, yes there is a few kilos of shell grit in the tank with my redclaw ;)
