In aquaponics the growbeds are used as filters, with some special exception for the RSG filter to offgas high nitrates.

Ja I understand this, but I like all filters hey. They all solve the same problems in different ways.
Figured a post showing a few of the more sneaky methods wouldn't hurt.
Where ever fish are involved it's handy to be handy with filters even if the plan is to not have to be.

I like the idea of multiple redundancy, so if things go wrong in one part of the system, the rest continues...
I have been tinkering with the idea of a separate biofilter operating in say an ornamental tank or pond to keep the bacteria ticking over, and then when a growbed is either harvested (reducing capacity to strip nutrients from water) or taken offline for service/repairs (leaking/move position/struck by lightning, increase in algal bloom, whatever), the biofilter could be brought online to compensate.
