Dan, it has been years since I have been there and maybe things have changed, but I was very disappointed. I don't know how to have you check it further, but I will try to call a friend that lives close to there.

Thanks Joyce! I don't mind spending if it for a good cause but I dont want to throw money away either. That money might just a well be spent on an inch of poly-urethane insulation for my hatchery.

The current issue of the aquaponics journal has an article on them DanD....

http://www.aquaponicsjournal.com/CurrentIssue.htm

Sorry don't have a subscription so I can't tell you what it's about....

But I can tell you that the article by Rebecca Nelson "As I See It..." .... has a somewhat scathing reference to the fledgling GANRAD organisation

Thanks Rupert, but I don't subscribe either.

Well, my fish water was stinking again today so I changed out 50%. Would it be safe to put some ozone or hydrogen peroxide in there to kill off the stinky bacteria?
pH 7.2
ammonia just a little
nitrites high more than 1
nitrates 60

Not sure why ammonia has re appeared, unless the family is over feeding when Im not looking. One of the fish has my wife trained, :) He gets in the corner and looks at her with those big eyes and opens his mouth.. Gets her every time..

hydrogen peroxide will kill both good and bad bacteria. You need to solve the root cause anyway.

I would increase aearation and pumping rate and put a lock on the food. Stink would most probably come from anaerobic decomposition of excess wastes.

You could try UV light also, but may be expensive to set up. What about mechanical charcoal type filter. Make one out of PVC pipe and a union joint put it inline on your pump intake to filter the water.

Use it every know and then to help when bio load gets too high.

Everything was fine till my quick fix bio filter/mini grow bed went anaerobic. I will add some more bubbles.

Oh, and morning star fishermen said last year they attended Dr James Rakocy's aquaponic Short Course at the University of the Virgin ISlands in St Croix and are wanting to offer commercial oriented courses.

Perhaps I should take a vacation to the Virgin Islands?

They basically said they are under funded, but working hard to improve. It sounds like they have a lot of systems with a lot of fish. Its does sound like in intro course. They said its the hands on aspect of working with a live working system that is the greatest benefit to people

Well, getting the nursery together...
Image

Everything is taking more time that I had hoped. The insulation guy can not get out for a month and I cant put the fish in before because of the toxic fumes form the stuff when its setting up.

I am still changing the water often because I don't have enough bio filter. Well, that until my new FSB filter kicks in! :D

Here are the fish while I was changing the water. They are getting to bif for the 20 gallon aquarium. I saw one jump half a foot out of the water the other day and they are making a habit of doing that! I need a top on the tank..

Well, along with 100 other things that I am working on I got the tin on the "hatchery." Just in time for one heck of a storm too. Proud to say, no leaks :)

File comment: The tin is on, just need a door and the insulation sprayed on.

I saw the embed flash link in the post reply area so I could not help but use it :)

It is streaming video, but not real time. I decided against real time because our internet connection at the house is already bad enough.

I made a 330 byte flash(.swf) file with an action script to stream a video file off my server. That video is only a 1.2 MB FLV file! Not bad I'd say. Anyway, if you dont have flash 8 or higher I would be glad to hook you up with a flash player. You just have to convert your video file and store it on the net. I can also convert a file for you if you would like. Just PM me if needed and I can give you a ftp site to send you file to.

Way cool! The fish look like they're trying to talk to you about something.

Yea, the big one the is talking is the one that has my wife trained to feed them. He always swims up to where you are and opens his mouth like that when he is hungry. It was feeding time, I think they were saying feed me! Notice after each time he does that he looks up to the spot where the food is always dropped.. And I thought we were the one doing the training, lol..
