It is sitting in ap water :P

I reckon the float will get covered in algae and then jammed in the housing.

hmmmm pretty but fails eventually OR tried and tested - I like the doily idea :)

Well! From what I can see of the design, for it to be jammed I would expect gunk to have to get in the valve bit. Because it will only be open when the water level is below it, and because when it opens there will essentially be positive pressure coming from the opening, nothing should be back washing inside the valve to jam it... you know :P stuff!

I don't mind a little monthly maintenance, compared to the time it will save having to manually top up. It's just so pretty :) I'll drop in to my local irrigation joint and see if they have anything similar, and ask them on their opinions :) Will report back tomorrow.

I use the hudson valve on a tank I have. I set it at the level where the tank should be when the pump has the beds full. If it gets any lower than that then I get a refill. It is a very rugged valve and has never failed.
