XP SP2 did hit the system resources, but fixed a hell of a lot of stuff. I am desperately waiting XP SP3 it is supposed to improve a lot of things, even to the point where it improves system performance.

I will see if Vista SP1 improves the operating system, I am not holding my breath!! I think I will wait for Windows 7...

We've got some vista machines at work. haven't had a problem with them, but all they get used for is some web access and word processing. I do tech support and I bet only 5% of the machines I support are vista.

Well XP SP3 RC 2 and V1.0 of the release notes for SP3 were released to the public Feb 19....

There's a growing rumour that the release of XP SP3 RTM (to manufacturers) will occur by end of this month ....

And a full public release by mid March....

Officially Microsoft is still staying late May/June.....

VISTA SP1 UPDATE .... ZONEALARM USERS PLEASE NOTE

Since the release of Vista SP1, there have been some reports of problems after installation....

A prerequisite update has been pulled from the Windows Update site until programmers can resolve an issue, first reported on Feb. 20, that led to some computers running Vista to go into an endless reboot cycle.

On Feb. 21, Microsoft published KB935796 warning that there is a known list of programs that will lose functionality when SP1 is applied. Loss of functionality means that the program will be blocked on your PC; will not run at all; or will run with reduced functionality. You can find the list of known issues in the KB article.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935796

The list is not considered to be comprehensive, and Microsoft has asked users who encounter problems with other applications to first restart their PC and, if they still encounter problems, to install a newer version of the program or contact the software vendor.

It is interesting to note that of the 12 programs listed, half are security products such as Bit Defender and Zone Alarm.

Many of the programs have updates posted on their Web sites to return the program to functioning properly.

For those about to take up the M$ club and begin ranting.... it's actually the fault of the listed software products and companies who haven't bothered to make their products Vista (or XP64) compatible....

Quote:
Microsoft said the blocks occur because the antivirus programs are not compatible with Vista SP1. “For reliability reasons, Microsoft blocks these programs from starting after you install Windows Vista SP1,”

Oh, for non vista user if you want to end new infections to your computer get and pay for sandboxie. It can not be beat once you learn how to use it. I have used it for 2 years and have never gotten any adware or viruses; and I have tried! Now, it will not help you with infections you already have. It also makes online purchases safe if you delete the sandbox after making a purchase. Anyway, check it out! It might keep your from being thrown aout the window... Image

Old (undisclosed) technique used by techies to recover data from physical hard disk crashes / disk head crashes....

Place the HDD in the freezer overnight..... remove.... plug it in... boot... and copy data flat out.... same thing usually good for up to an hour....

diff physics though. ;)

how cool was that? hdd encryption nearly worthless. esp.

done with a purpose you'd only need a couple of minutes with the PC to glean the key.

Nah I didn't actually.... what a bottle of freeze spray will cool the DRAM down to -198C  ... and hold for 10 minutes?? .... without the chip cracking and/or lossing contact with the slot contacts?

I'll have to check it out

Kind of wondering though, other than those on a "mission impossible" style operation... who'd bother and why? ... there are easier ways to acheive that kind of industrial/state/law enforcement espionage.
