Yep, I'll tell everyone that the Yabbies are there because it provides an extra food source for the Perch - they are a vital part of the system.... but we all know the truth.

The Yabbies are there because I saw that recipe for garlic yabbies. YUM :)

yeah when i breed the yabbies, I'll keep the best ones to grow and feed the rest to the fish

be nice if i could keep all the yabbies to grow and eat myself.....but being cannibalistic...... :(

Yabbies are very nice to eat and IMO are less work to get into than shelling prawns. The taste is subtler too I think, but if you have ever had them directly from a muddy farm dam you know why they sometimes get a bad name.

Even just a day spent purging in fresh water does wonders for the taste, they tend to "suck up" some of the dam water when they are dragged out in the net.

I think the trick is to have a bucket of fresh water handy for the yabbies when you pull them out. There is a thing that happens if you pull yabbies out of a dam and want to keep them alive as pet or what ever. If you don't put them in water they close their gills (gills?) up tight to prevent moisture loss. When you dredge up the net it kicks up all this anerobic muck from the bottom and this gets into them and becasue they have closed their gills it ends up infecting them. Might be the same for yabbies you are going to eat. hence the day in fresh water. you'd probably find that even less than a day would be fine :)

We puled about 75 from a dam, straight into abucket of water in the afternoon, then BBQ about 4 hrs later. visibility in the dam was about 50mm. taste? supurb :)

They are yummy hey, just fry them off in a little butter lemon and garlic, add a splash of white wine, chilli or ginger if you want, then just toss through leafy greens (hopefully aquaponically grown) and it doesn't get much better than that.

It is amazing how many farmers just don't know how easy it is to harvest them, and potentially how many their dams could produce just by regularly harvesting (to maintain a good market size) and providing some food supplements.
