I've not mentioned it before but the number of SP in my FT dwindled down to ~35. That is my best guess based on peering in the tank during feeding time on a bright sunny day. (They move too quickly to get an accurate fishcount!)

With only ~20 corpses (~15 fatalities early on due to the "waterslide incident" & a few floaters) there should be an extra 45 fish somewhere!

My theory is that the smaller ones (~20-30mm) were eaten! Both by the larger SP & the 7 comets.

So anyway, I ended up ordering some more SP from www.aquablueseafoods.com.au . I asked for 40-50mm fingerlings but when they arrived today I discovered they are more like 80-100mm fingerlings!! Way cool! :D

Not bad at all!.... I'm not much further south than you.... how much was the freight?

Were they flown down and had to pick them up from the airport? or were they couriered?

The first order was $39 freight - cos they were smaller they all fit in one polystyrene box.

This time it was 2 boxes so freight was $61.

Realistically, I don't think I'll be able to get my mega system together and cycled before the weather turns colder....

The tank will be in the garage so I'll pump through the growbeds and see what sort of temperature I get from heat transfer and maintain in the shed....

Then I'll look at it, but at this stage I'm figuring I'll probably go trout over winter... silvers, maybe barra in spring.

The little experimental system will have some goldies thrown in it in a couple of weeks... maybe next week....

Got a trip to Canberra end of month then a week in Grafton ..... :sigh:

If the temp in the big tank holds higher than I think...

I might get a few big silvers off John at Jamberoo and try and winter them over.

Might pay a bit more for the size, but I'll save the freight by being able to drive over and pick them up.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I need it at the moment because ...

Question: what grows faster than AP vegetables?
Answer: caterpillars eating AP vegetables.

The little *frack* are literally eating my Pak Choy faster than it can grow!

I know I can use Dipel, but is that appropriate when more appear every day?

Are there any companion plants I can use to deter the butterflies from laying their eggs on them?

Every day I usually pick them off & feed them to the fish ... I really do not like them ... I enjoy watching the fishies eat them alive!! A LOT!

My latest seem to the the lawn grub type pillers. Big fat bastards. In the day they seem to sit on the top of the media and then at night they feast on the leaves. I also like feeding them to the fish :-).

Would put some Dipel on, but keeps raining here.

PS - Pak Choy is always the first to go in a system. One strategy may be to plant some as a sacrificial plant and just spray that with Dipel :-)

Could you put a fine netting over the pak choi to keep the butterflies from laying their eggs?
