I am looking at going to Florida and taking a 1 week seminar on aquaponic tilipia. I was looking at the one week seminar.

The whole affair is going to cost $995 with travel cost. What do you guys think? Would it be worth it?

From the site:
Quote:
A five-day, more in-depth course than the one-day seminar that teaches the fundamentals of aquaponic systems, tilapia biology and aquaculture. Students will learn the different options that exist setting up aquaponic systems and the principles that you need to know for efficient operation. Lots of invaluable hands-on training that will allow participants to get a feel of what it takes to be a successful aquaponics farmer.

Course focuses on in-classroom lectures as well as hands-on experience and training. Course is fast paced, interactive and challenging. Informal course setting which allows plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Intended for individuals that are seriously considering investing in their own aquaponic system to produce safe, healthy and nutritious fish and vegetables for their own consumption, or as an innovative business. Students, professors or industry professionals looking to expand their skills, knowledge or career opportunities, missionaries and community workers interested in aquaponics or aquaculture as a way to produce a constant supply of high quality protein and nutritious vegetables for community development and enrichment.

Topics Covered:

* Aquaponics systems, components and design
* Basic characteristics, needs, habits and advantages of Tilapia
* Dos and Don’ts of breeding and raising Tilapia
* Integrating hydroponics to Tilapia culture (aquaponics)
* Plant selection, culture, propagation, pest control, and harvesting
* Building and managing small backyard or demo-sized systems

I think it is meant for people whos tart from scratch, maybe you'll learn 10% more than what you can find here but it is bloody expensive for that you'll bring back.
Better put 100$ in tilapia breeding books from amazon and the same for commercial hydroponics. there's not even a course on business which is the only thing you can't find here.
That's what i think but if your on holidays with a bit of cash go and do the trip for sure

I cant imagine that i can learn anything from them I cant find here. I will be getting all the hands on as I go.. At this point I would rather put that money in a DIY green house. It was the idea of hands on and learning the 'correct' way to breed and raise tilapia that got my interest.

I'm not sure it's worth that kind of money. As you point out, the tilapia breeding part might be helpful, but I'm making some progress and will share what I learn.

Hey DanD, what seminar are you going to in Florida?
I might say I agree with Janet, I'm not sure you will get as much as you can by on-the-job training and putting your money in your system, now if you want to come to Florida, it is a great place with lots to do and see.

Joyce, its morning star fishermen. There is a link in my post if you wanted to take a look. If they were going to save me some troubles then it might be worth it, but everyone on this forum is very helpful and there is plenty of knowledge here.

Janet, I always keep an eye on your post what you have shared with me is very helpful.

Speaking of which, I noticed that the males I put in a tank by themselves act more shy than the masses in the larger tank. I guess its normal for smaller numbers of fish to be more shy?

DanD. Since I have been there I would suggest that you check them out a little closer before you decide to go there.

yeah Joyce, I was actually thinking of a trip there myself to see how they were making it applicable to ministry in underdeveloped countries. I would love to hear of any misgivings so I can hold onto my money rather than wasting it.
