That would be a server in normal working mode, the power only needs to last long enough for an orderly shut down of the computer which is automatic and inisiated by the UPS.

Have you thought about an air commpressor, they store air and you can release it slowly through a regulator.
it should supply air for days.

I'd wonder if using an air comp would introduce oil into the water. What about a dive tank?

How long it lasts depends on the size of the UPS and the amount of power drawn from it by the devices plugged into it, hence Steves experiment.

You are correct in that usually when sizing a UPS you need to allow for its battery to last for around 30mins, which allows a bit of time for the power to come back on (lets say ~ 20 mins) as most blackouts don't last that long, and if it doesn't some time (say another 10 mins) to allow the machine to shutdown gracefully.

Murray uses an air compressor, or at least mentioned it in a previous post, they can also be purchased fairly cheaply these days but it is the automated failover that is the attraction in a UPS. I guess you could have the comp plugged into the UPS tho...

You could get the ups to sms your mobile during the power outage as an added warning feature

this was brought up by Muzza a while back, the disadvantage with it is that compressors have a nasty habit of starting up around 2am - just what you need outside the bedroom.
