Ok a few comments and a few questions
have 2 barra and 2 blue crays in the system, also with the feeder fish and the goldys, the water is a bit cloudy because my gravel wasn't completely clean but i am slowly adding clean water..

The float valve is on a very short leash but i had to raise the hieght ov where it hinged so that it would switch off before over flooding the bed
i did this with a large swivel like bit of metal that you get from the key section in the hardware, it allows the float to sit how it wants a bit better

???
if i put a cage covered in shade cloth around my pump to protect baby crays will that lower the good suff getting into the gravel? the sump has already pulled a few feeder fish thru it

how long does the bacteria take to get going in the gravel? will it be noticable in plant growth when it does.

do the fish/ crays need clear water to see the feed? i'd rather slowly clear the water by bucketing it onto my normal garden bit by bit rather than doing a complete drain.. i've fished for barra in some pretty murky water?

They normally feed more in the dark (evening to night) so I would say that seeing their feed is not as important and 'smelling' it...

Bees. from my understanding, it takes anywhere from 4 - 12 weeks to cycle a new system. When I put my minisystem together, the plant did nothing for about 4 weeks, then all of a sudden it had 10 new fronds overnight. It was obvious that something had happened and nitrates were present. Hope this helps

a few additions
my sump bin was 2 small at 20L so i doubled the size now perfect!
there is a bit of a drip from the return hose so i've put a mint plant in to capture it.
Also found a mesh box at the hardware for $3 so have sunk it in the back as a feeder fish cage, i will dole them out to the barra in bits
i have 2 barra and 2 blue yabbies now just saw the big barra so i know he is dealing with the shock of 21 degree water ok for now. You can also just see the swivel i used to rise the turning point of the float valve
flooding and draining on a 18 min cycle big pump runs for 38 sec a cycle
