Moke - yep looked at them and I like them (like the pet feeder better  )

Rope - there was an article on a DIY chicken feederthis one

What I have bought is an auto pet feeder, the chute and tray need to be modified (removed) to allow the pellets to flow straight into the fish tank

as always - I know exactly what I'm talking about  - its just all these other people don't understand me :bigsmurf:

Jayme, I have a problem making the 50 lb (22 kilo) bag rattle enough to interest them!

Ell, I didn't know if you had enough fish to need the bigger feeder or not. The one you showed does look good though for a smaller system.

Kevin, I keep the 25kg bag in a storage bin under the house and fill up a 1.5L bottle every couple of days. That rattles nicely :D

I am interested in knowing how your pet feeder has worked out as a fish feeder after 7 months of use.
I have a small auto feeder but get sick of refilling it every 4 days  and with a 3 week holiday coming up, I am looking at something bigger.
Do you have any pics of the mounting/mods you made to it?
One last question...is it weatherproof?

P - I am using the same type as Les. It is working okay so far. The only minor problem I was faced with was that the minimum feed using 4mm pellets turned out to be in the vicinity of 100 grams. This is a little risky for my barra at this point - particularly if away. The solution was to pour plater of paris into one of the 2 sides of the barrel that collects and dispenses the food . If I ever need it gone (ie if the fish end up needed a very very large quantity - cos it will do multiple rotations), then I'll just dig it out.

It is not weather proof. I guess some mods could be made to bring it closer to this. Even inside (my barra tank is in the shed) I'm a little concerned about condensation and spashes stuffing up the mechanisms or binding up the food (particularly as there is still soem salt in my water).

The only mod at present id to cut out the bottom part of the tray so the food drops into the tank.

can you hang the feeder higher above the tank so they can't splash it, somewhere up around the 15' mark ;)

 could do - but at the moment I have a shelf of sorts sitting on top of the tank - so it is convenient to have it there.

Tho - the mezanine level is above the bay of the shed that the tank is in. I coul actauly have the fish feeded up in the meazanine level and then have th food directed through a pip down into the tank. I'm serious. I would have to vermin proof it - though I think the big snake up in the mezanine is keeping the mice and rats under control

Just climb the ladder. I go up there all the time to get crap. It holds a lot of food, so doesn't have to be filled all that often (till the fish get bigger ).
