liquid gold never hurt my goldies, but then I was prepared to lose them. Instead they bred like rabbits!!!

i like tclynx's method of bottling it and letting the PH sky rocket. this will kill any nasties AND convert the urea to ammonia so dosing to an appropriate level 1 - 2 ppm (with no livestock) easy.

you need to cycle up before the weather cools down so you can get the trout going............

Yeah mate :P That's the plan! Wanna get them in as early as possible to make best use of the cold weather.

i recon seed your beds, go visit helpful AP people around the area or anyone with home aquariums even both! swap a few litres of gravel with the AP'er and collest some festy looking crap from anyone with a healthy aquarium.

YAY! FESTY CRAP ;) Now ya talking :P I got a mate with a few aquariums, might borrow some gunk off him :P (and beg Jim for a gravel swap! :P)

You're going trout, yes?

Hells yeah!

i'd be inclined to try your urea dosing or "other" methods. see TClynx's thread, i think she's fully cycled in around 2 or so weeks? and i'd bet her system will now support a huge bio load.

I'll have a read and see what seems to be the best method, someone mentioned urea and I know the old man has bags of the stuff, free is good ;)

steve wrote:
OR if you are patient, you can go and pick up the fish in small batches (5 every couple of weeks) and monitor water quality strictly.

I'll try one of the 'short cuts' first :)

Oh yeah!

steve wrote:
If you're going to artificially cycle via urea or liquid gold then i'd probably take the goldies out and put them in a couple of hundred litre aquarium. but then again, they're not going to co-habit with the trout, just as BK :)

Poor sacrificial goldies! I'll have to make them a new pond now! :P

steve wrote:
Some one else here has successfuly used urea too although it may take a few days for the ammonia to register, so dont over do it.

I'll go have a read then :)

steve wrote:
If you go the "other" method, do read through tcl's thread.

Roger!

sounds like trout are going to have a good following this year :)

Yeah! Until I go SP when I harvest the trout! :P

ken,

do a forum search (posts) for urea.

this may be useful

http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/vie ... rea#102333

i think jims system was already cycled though.

try and start with say 4g of urea. dissolve it and then add it to the water at the water return area. don'
t add any more until you get an ammonia reading, this may take a couple of days..................

try and maintain an ammonia level of around 1ppm. you should notice that the ammonia will decrease in quicker and quicker time spans.........monitoring nitrites will also help you build a picture.

using this method with some GOOD seeding of gravel and aquarium crap (beg them to actually squeeze the filter for you) might get you cycled in around 2 weeks.

Keep us up to date and once again DONT over do the urea, wait for it to be converted to ammonia

My old man, he gets them from work, little white balls of goodness :P

P.S. Also available at B for like $16 a bag, I just grabbed some there, saved me a trip to the marsh!

OK no worries :) I'll try not to go overboard!

I did a search for urea the other day, you know how much of a monster these forums are! There were easily half a billion threads with urea in it! :P

Urea Dosing, Day 1!

I've put 4 wendy's spoons into 2lt of water and applied to the growbeds. So now I suppose I'll just wait and see what happens. Didn't think there was any point testing it now, I'll test tomorrow arvo and see if anythings happening :)

PS when you do a search make sure you select the "display as posts" button

it then returns the results as posts with your keyword highlighted.

hahaha, hell no! I thought I would do a big dose to get things started, then smaller amounts (say 1tsp/day) from now on! Plus I've got no way to measure 4 grams precisely anymore :P Sold my 500g/0.1g scales when I left Bacchus Marsh ;) I'll wait a couple of days and test to see if any magic has started!

My mates giving me 25lt of aquarium water, he's going to wash his filters this weekend and squeeze out all the gunky goodness into the container :D

cool. be aware that extremely high levels of ammonia have been shouwn to actually inhibit the growth of nitrifying bacteria.......................

DAG NAB IT! Ahh well, 4 teaspoons in 4000ltr's should be fine to kick start things! As the generation before us said 'the solution to pollution is dilution'... idiots :P
