That is the easiest way to fix it, I dug the hole larger and fitted a plastic laundry basket in it to hold a sump pump and float valve - surprising how often it kicks in with all the rain about our area too at present

May not be easy to extend the hole without making it child safe.

Wheelie bin was buried to the lid and filled in around it.
pics: bugger system is timing out on pic upload. will try again later.

Geez! Not much headroom for digging!

How long did it take you to dig the hole? (How's your back feeling?)

You have my sympathy Skygazer, I had exactly the same thing happen last week when a pipe joint let go and floated my wheelie bin sump out of the ground.
Snapped a drain pipe too
After getting rid of the mud and resetting all the pipe work, I have built a small levee bank around the sump so ground water will be diverted away.
That is probably your best solution too....at least you don't have to do too much more digging. :D
Wish we could have a bit of your rain...we haven't had 140mm in the past 6 months. :D

My biggest problem is that the water is not coming from the surface. It is coming in from the sides of the hole starting approx 40cm below the surface lip ! May need to make a concrete sump then find a good way to secure it from the little one, or find another way to keep the bin from floating. Forcast is for another week of rain.

As for the rain, it is totally wated here, I live about 500m from the beach and it just goes out to sea.

Is it possible to get some 6mm tubing, tie a rock to it, dump it in the pit, suck on the other end to get a siphon going away from the pit? Perhaps somewhere lower so it drains to the level of the siphon exit.

Difficulty I have, and many others I think, is that the sump is in the lowest part of the property... :-(
Hang on you got me thinking... Skygazer, how far is your stormwater from your sump pit? Any chance of getting a drain into the sump pit?

Spot on KudaPucat: Sump is lowest part of property. Not sure where the stormwater is but that is definately worth investigating. thanks
