Be carefull with an anaerobic zone in the system, I would think that fine sand would be an issue. Maybe 5 mm sand would be great I suppose maybe add some seashells to buffer the pH in case.
The thing is if you put a media on the top of the flush tank, it will act as a filter and stop the organic particles to go in the growbeds less stimulating the bacteria in them. And you would the reduce the surface area for bacteria in the system since they'll all be in the place where the food stays. Maybe "T"ing the water inlet to the flush tank would let you dilute the organic particles and spread them in the sand grow bed and the other ones.
Might be good to try a RSG system in a small zone of the sand bed, it could give you chelated iron and minerals. EllKayBee did a system like that recently.
Hope you'll like the ideas. Keep it up and going.

Amacafish,
though I have been promoted (grin) thanks to the number of my contributions (alas not the contents) I still feel a newbie on lots of subjects.

So using letter words confuses me.

I know it is fastidious, but could you include the explanation for us beginners?

What is RSG?

Frank

Frank, an RSG is a "really smart guy" filter, used to create an anaerobic zone in a grow bed, discussed in depth

Really Smart Guy filter. Check it out on the forum board, it is Janet Pelletier that discovered and introduced the principles. EllKayBee's system in the member's system part has been equiped with them as well.
It is about creating an anaerobic zone that will be colonized by anaerobic bacteria that chelate iron. Anyway check it out it is brilliant and I can't describe it as well as the others did.

Hi Jaimie,
I have nothing to hide, especially not my identity, still I strongly resent the way you expose my IP and ISP as if I am a suspect that needs to be controlled.

I think this is childish behavior and nothing more than the roaring of an infant lion: "Look what I can do !!!"

Now I am all for assassinating spammers and scammers and I have sufficiently proven this in the past.

grow up, and use your valuable skills wheere and when they are needed, not with any and everybody. This is overkill.

Frank

Frank, the sign in my signature is a joke. It only shows YOU your IP and ISP. It shows me my IP and ISP. Everybody sees their own information. I am not targeting anyone.

Frank - you do realise of course that it is only you who sees that message. Each person will see their own IP. Therefore, your IP and ISP are not 'exposed' to anyone but you.

The thing gives your own IP and ISP, depends on who's reading. It is just a program found on the net.
You seem to be in bad mood these days hygicell!

There was no way I could have known that my ISP and IP were not visible to others, since that is nowhere mentioned. So "of course I didn't realise". How could I?

So I think my reaction, even if it was wrong, is valid: I see no reason why anybody should show off their skills, unless it would serve a purpose.
This is not a question of sense of humour (rest assured, I like fun):
This way this tool loses it's only possible purpose I can imagine, that is to warn somebody that, if he /she crosses a line, can be exposed.

I am never in a bad mood when thinking aquaponics, again rest assured, quite the contrary:
It is giving me a boost to go on, hence my contributions. They are multiple AND always to the point.

but I spend too much time reading (and writing, as I am trying to add my limited knowledge to the forums) posts, because this is an enormously appreciated source of knowledge and I don't want to miss anything.
I want to thank you all for your very valuable contributions.
But I am getting quite frustrated as I would like to spend more time constructing, so please help me (and others) with this to some shortcuts.

Take the RSG thread for which I thank you for pointing it out: but it has 12 pages of posts. I think, after reading the first two pages, that maybe 10 % is relevant, (hopefully).
The rest is friendly banter, to which I am not at all opposed, but it does not help with efficient reading, sorry to say so.
It will take me another 3 to 4 hours to carefully read the rest to make sure I haven't missed anything, since you all say it is spectacular info.

Can anybody who knows the subject condense it to what is really important and post this in the files section? I for one and no doubt others would be very thankful.

Frank

Maybe you could do this after you have read it Frank

Not taking the piss - it is just a tactic I use when my staff decide that it would be a good idea if something was done and decide to suggest it to me, with no intention of doing it themselves. It's like they think I am going to do it or something. The natural response is 'that's a great idea :insert name:, when can you have it done by'

not funny at all, Veggie boy.
And too fast a reaction.

That is what I eliminate for myself: Impulsiveness. I always consider if what I write is relevant to the whole community, not to just an individual.
I'm not trying to lecture you, which is the bottom of your reaction, though maybe not meant this way.

If you have read any of my posts on either this or the barrelponics forums, you will know that that is exactly what I do: condense and give relevant information and back it up.

I probably will condense the RSG thread if nobody else does and post it (I'm not promising), just to show my sincere gratitude to the writers. I have never lacked in showing my engagement.

Frank

I look forward to the summary then Frank and maybe you will have something valuable to add on top of what has already been said.

My RSG filter has not resulted in any noticable reduction in nitrate - but it is really quite difficult to judge effectiveness without running 2 systems side by side - one with and one without RSG. I've not given up on the idea by any means and although I have not tried the iron side of things yet - will probably give it a go at some time in the future.

and by the by Frank - I use the laughing icon to show I am not entirely serious, not necessarily to indicate that I think what I am saying is funny :-)
