When I was emptying the sump tank I was thinking that I shouldn't take out too much, then I thought of the pump to stop the water from accumulating...so everything would be fine  almost :angry4:

I pumped some water onto my lawn over new year Les. It drained back to my sump pit and popped one of my sumptanks about 2 inches. Know how u feel. Unlike u, I am too lazy to fix mine, just gunna border the sump pit with sleepers and it will all look schmick!
Luckily it was full at the time and didn't snap the pipe connecting the 2 sumps.

Another update

Connected the new tank up to a nice clean sump tank and 2 small GBs with turbo charged RSG filters :bigsmurf:

The double throated RSG filters and pH buffer silo - Pic1
- the 2 inner silos have a mixture of sand & activated charcoal, the outer silo on each GB holds shellgrit for buffering :D
- a stocking has been put over each silo inlet to stop crud from forming a layer on the top and clogging the water flow

Pic2 - decided to do a bit of a mod on the bell siphons so connected the 2 GBs, through 2 air traps and joined both together using 40mm down pipe into one 50mm pipe to the tank

Pic3 New fish tank - setup the same as the larger one with water being pumped in causing a swirling action - it is then fed to the GBs via the venturi drain (no fish in there yet)

Why did I do this extreme make over??? - coz nobody else has :bigsmurf:

File comment: Some "Tees" joining 2 RSG filters and a shellgrit buffer silo - when the water is being drained from the GBs, more water is being sucked through the silos and none is pouring out freely from the ends (as is the case in the pic)

File comment: Straight drop from GBs with 40mm pipe into 45/90/90 degree elbows to form a nice air trap for each GB.
40/50 reducer into a 50mm pipe and "tee" to the sump tank

File comment: Small black thing on the water inlet pipe is a venturi, sucking in air as water is pumped into the tank - note the bubbles

There is some unusual things happening when the siphons kick in:
1) if both try to go at the same time, only one wins as the 50mm outlet is only 1.5 times greater than an individual 40mm pipe...what occurs is one fires 1st and drains flat out, then the other kicks in but some water must be escaping as the level doesn't rise further
2) When one fires whilst the other is filling, the bell pipe starts to bobble about as air is pushed up into the chamber

Have had no troubles with flooding and both are working well together

File comment: Siphon outlets (40mm) being connected to the 50mm Tee and then back to the sump - water filter MkI catching any silt from the newly washed gravel

Groovy!

Keep experimenting with the dual siphons and maybe you could get them to alternate.

No...No...No...Dave!!!!!! - somebody else has already done that

I reckon they are real cool (and they work  )

It was nearly gonna be triple throated until you mentioned converting yours to shellgrit/shells/whatever Janet - so just had to go one step better
