Hi, I was tricked into been the "patsy" which loaded up the "little green trailer" by TimC and got to visit Joels store (i think as the reward :D). While there i noticed you could basically start up a whole aquaponics system in a day (buying everything you need).

One thing he is missing though is the fish, is there any legal reason why he can't stock up on fish and re-sell them at his store? Many aquariums don't need licenses to sell fish and personally i sell the fry i get from my fish. So is it any different because these fish can be eaten?

I would come round and help him setup a few glass tanks if he is interested :D Just two 6x2x2 foot aquariums on a stand with a growbed (pipes going outside) for filtration. Then buy 100-200 fish (i know a person who supplies the fish to most of the W.A fish farms) and your set :D I would say indoors best just in case there is a few cold nights.

But the government are the "anti-fun police" so i am sure there is something in the way :(.

Nic

I asked my mate at veba's last week about silver perch - he had some but theres laws against him selling them to eat ( plus theyre 5 bucks each ) / put in ponds , Im assuming then that someone who sells fish for eating requires a liscence of some sort ?

then again - add the price of the fish that the customers wants on top of whatever else they purchase , and say its the deluxe model , that comes with free fish !

I watched a documentary about the guy that started Ansett , he wasnt allowed to charge for coach tickets cause he was in direct competition with the government , so he sold 5 buck oranges at the terminal and gave away the coach rides for free - same principal , heheeheh

Is your mate Pacco?

Well can Joel sell them for the aquaponics not with the intention that your going to eat them... but if you do then its your problem :D

There are absolute bogans out there which inhale products like paint and petrol does that mean stations should stop selling petrol :D

Have a look at www.fish.wa.gov.au

You need a licence to sell fish, marron, yabbies etc. Some species can be sold to someone with a licence to onsell.

Yep, need a license to sell - and can then be subject(ed) to health inspections and regulations.... need a license to transport "live" fish.... etc

you need a licence to breed fish too (for any purpose other than your own use, eg breeding guppies for feeder fish to feed to your own fish, or to GIVE AWAY)

Only tasmania has a license to breed... or else the fish hobby would be screwed :D :D

Adelaide might but i am sure that Melbourne, Qld and W.A are fine as i have traded with breeders from there, was even told there was a license for Tas from these people :D

I know that there is no license for trading fish as many people here (W.A) do it as a hobby business and most fish stores don't need a license, only a registered business and Import licenses.

I think you may need a aquaculture license to trade aquaculture fish.

fish stores need one in vic as they should in WA. as soon as you SELL fish then you need to be licensed to my knowledge.

maybe fisheries aren't as ruthless in policing it in WA?

government departments will regulate what ever is in their power, in order to fund kushi office jobs. if they didn't regulate everything then they would cease to have a reason to exist. generally gov workers wouldn't have a clue about nature or the environment.

so in short yes you do need a license to sell fish. i was surprised that you even need a license to sell goldies in WA. most of those selling them in the quokka are actually committing a crime.

having said this most policies come down to the discretion of the individuals in charge of implementing them. i think that aquarium shops are overlooked as they aren't making huge profits from it. if someone dobs you in however then they will be forced to look into it. same as if your neighbor dobbed you in to the council for a barking dog. they have to investigate if theres a complaint.

i think the idea of fisheries is right but they really need more imput directly from the farmers and fishermen. atm there seems to be a huge communication barrier between them.

i'm sure if you try to do the right thing you will be ok. just don't piss of the gov or anyone else. it will come back to bite you.

it would probably depend on who you spoke to about it. from what i gather you almost need to know someone in fisheries to get one. i have never applied for one myself but have read stories about peoples struggles to get licenses. sometimes there is a wait of years before you even know if its a possibility. if you know someone in there though it may be a matter of weeks. it would help a lot to know people in the system. if i were you i would do work expirience with fisheries. i imagine if you work your way in then you would have a better chance. same with any governing body though.

perhaps others have had better success here. troutman might be one to speak to about this. also Faye knows a bit about it.

it shouldn't be so difficult if they expect people to do the right thing. surly its up to them to do the right thing. unfortunately this doesn't seem to have happened. if it did then the industry in WA would be booming. sadly everything seems to be going on over east. the short sightedness of the gov once again has crippled the long term potential of this state. sigh.

if i ever apply for a license i hope i'm proven wrong but will see.

I will be selling fish one day Nic, just not quite yet. Firstly there's the licensing to deal with, and secondly you need a fair set up to keep thousands of fish. This is in the planning stage ATM..

How hard is it to get a license?? Well it's up to fisheries on a case by case basis, might be easy, or maybe not.
