Why stop at 80%. I'd go total block out. I had a similar problem about 18 months ago and cleared it up within 2 days by coverring the tank with panda fabric.

Yep, patience now Alan and no feeding.. It may take 2-3 weeks for the system to clear, but it will, then you'll be able to return everything to normal and increase the feeding.

At the moment in my system thats only 9-10 weeks old, I'm feeding 150 Barra about 4-5 cups of feed a day and the water is sparkling clear. 4 weeks ago, the water was like pea soup.

i find that my system goes green during the summer if i leave it uncoverd.

i thiks its always better having the tank in the shade that way you sort the algae and you can still marvel at the fish :)
