When the "discoverers" discovered the different Plecostomus and gibbiceps (catfish) there was no way to make scientific names in time. So they labled the catfish with L number starting at L001 (goldspot pleco) and right up to L*infinity*.

One of my favorites the L046 (Zebra Pleco) and one of the most expen$ive ($800 at 3cm):

I might be getting soon a few Gold spots L001 and Sailfin gibbys (L-83) to resell so anyone interested ill let you know soon.

Sailfin:

Gold spot:

They are for the more advanced fish keepers and the better looking bigger the price. As a ruff estimate the Sailfins and Goldspots would be around $40 at 10cm may be more.

Are folks actually breeding plecos in captivity? How hard is it? I thought they were all wild-caught.

In queensland they can breed Goldspot plecos so i assume common plecos and sailfin gibbys are bred aswell. All other L numbers are... lets just say brought in.

Large dark muddy dams are required I'm told. It can't be done in a tank.

As nic says, the common plecos are bred... the others well... some haven't even been approved by quarantine yet... That tends to make them a minimum $400 :-)

Well... they... technically don't exist... (wink) (wink)

If you breed them here in Australia you are strengthening the hobby, then less fish can be smuggled into this country.

Update: I have thrown in around 30 seeds of pak choi and i am now waiting the 5 days or so for germination.

I really know nothing about plants (i am more into fish) and hope they all germinate will get some pictures once/if it happens.

nic, Plants are easy. They give you HEAPS of warning if somethings wrong, and take forever to die, to give you a chance to fix the problem. :-)
Fish on the otherhand... You have to sorta know what you're doing don't ya?

Lol is that a question? and if yes then of course you need to know what you are doing. I think allot of people lean on the plants side of AP which is good and all but unless your keeping only goldfish / ornamental fish you really need to spend just as much time researching and monitoring the fish. Not to say that goldfish and ornamentals don't need as much research.

Personally i am using AP as a use for fish waste in aquaculture and the plants are the bonus :D
