I noticed on the website before the forum there is a book or dvd about aquaponics and it mentions pacu (page 53) as a fish species. Does anyone have these in their AP systems? and where do you get them from?

Are these the Pacu species that is mentioned in the book?

I have heard of people having these "piranha" like fish in fish tanks but didn't know you can eat them?

Mainly a fish found in the lower states of the US, more commonly through Central America...

OTher than possibly the aquarium trade I don't think they're available here in OZ.... bet you'd probably pay through the nose for them as well.

Nic ...

I bet they are illegal. (Related to Piranah I think.....)

Did you manage to have success with breeding the convicts ...?

Am I correct in thinking that Tim managed to get some success breeding from the mossambique stock I gave you.

Have you eaten any yet?

Hi All, My first post, yippee, anyway Pacu's are a prohibited import into OZ and all of the Serrasalmidae family excluding silver dollars and red hooks are considered noxious species by Qld DPI, not sure on other states.

:D

Welcome wadeo, seem to recall your sign-on from somewhere else....

Glad to have you aboard. Have you got a system up and running or are you still in the planning stage?

Thanks, been doing plenty of reading, have just set up a couple of tiny continuous flow set ups, one atop our turtle tank and another for our little frog pond. Renting in a pain, cant set up anything on a large scale :( ....one day.

Hopefully moving to Cairns for work soon, so once there will try and convince my darling accountant to approve some expenditure... will try anyway.

We have a seized Pacu in a quarantine tank at work and I can certainly vouch for their great growth rates, and can see why they are disliked by DPI.

What I've read about Pacu is that they are not meat eaters, but rather vego's... They have many of them over here in W.A. in aquarium shops, but the price is rather crazy... :?
