The network news (non-cable ABC, NBC, CBS) is 1/2 hour long. You can kind of derive what you'd see based on that number, minus about ten minutes of commercials for antacids and laxatives. What you'd gather from it is that the President is in the Middle East for some peace talks or something and that there was an Australian Open recently.

Actually I like to hear what is going on with the presidential election when that is happening, so I listen to the Lehrer news hour over the radio. I was explaining that it isn't boring if the people who are doing the talking are very interested in the topic. If they sound excited and interested in what is happening then that can make it interesting to watch.

Hi TimC, I've heard all of that info, but I don't watch the news on TV. I heard about it from NPR (public radio).

If you're like my parents and rely on the TV for information then you'd be poorly served. If you widen the search to include public radio, newspapers and the Internet then we easily receive all the info you get, just not from the major network news or the more partisan cable news networks.

We get the "Lehrer" news hour on SBS (local) every day... and CNN and ABC, NBC, CBS on dedicated "pay TV" channels

By the way.... the President is not only talking peace in the Middle East, but from what we've heard is also beating the war drum over Iran quite loudly

Yep, the gist is that he's shoring up support with the Saudis against Iran.

Yeah... if you were worried about a rogue state that sponsers and harbours terrorism, is a military dictatorship and has a nuclear capability....

Wouldn't you think you'd be waving the big stick (or a few cruise missles) at Parkistan???

Then again, I guess it's easy (and safer) to pick a fight with someone that has limited military capability, no nuclear arsenal and whole lotta oil :D

And the Saudis aren't exactly saints.....

Funny how we can't find Osama, but the major Saudi ruling family can make it to weddings and birthdays etc....

FYI... update on the whale situation....

Two of the "Sea Shepard"'s crew boarded the Japanese whale processing ship today to present a letter outlining an Australian court decision and injunction.

The Japanese took the "hostage" tied them with cable ties and ropes and have steamed off with them .... refusing to allow them off....

Becoming a major diplomatic row.

Well we were a bit foolish after 9-11 and believed our leaders when they said Iraq had nuc's. We are in a different spot now I hope.

And so say all of us GF... I just hope the hawks don't go all out for a last desperate roll of the dice before their term ends.

I am just surprised more than anything that very little world affairs are on US TV. I get sick of the news on TV.

I do read the paper, listen to the radio and I go on many websites during my lunch break including CNN, NewYorkTimes and of course SlashDot. I RSS most of the big ones.

If I see something on TV that is interesting I usually look it up on the net.

Out of curiosity what fills up the other 23.5 hours on these stations?

About the whaling protest... yep....

Accusations flying about kidnapping.... piracy....

Both the Australian AND the Japanese government have called for the "hostages" to be returned.... threats of International Court suits ...

Late news suggests that the whaling ship has turned around and may be heading back to the Sea Shepherd

As far as war goes, just make sure you folks are not fooled as well. We gladly thank those who supported us after 9-11 with the Taliban and appoligize about Iraq. I could not believe this could happen but too many trusted our leaders.
ok no more OT for me.
