I have been itching to ask this question since my auntie and uncle got back from America.

Do you guy's/gal's have the ability to watch world news on your normal television networks (not pay t.v.)
My rello's said to me it was very hard to find a network who televised anything to do with out side info.
Unfortunately I opened my big mouth and said it sounded like Bulls@#t to me (to the tune of $100:00) and now would like to find out.

to make it clearer I'm not talking about wars etc, but If i was there and wanted to know what was happening back home (Australian News) would it be easy to find?

Well I get basic cable T.V. At the cost of about $26 a month they supply me with maybe 12 channels that consist of crap. Sorry but I see no outside news as none is provided. All comes from U.S. stations any outside would be thier countries reporter with a few bits of whatever got through the edit room. We are bombarded with Britney Spears did this today and Anna Nicoles babies first steps.
You can have Murdock back already please!

Yes on CNN, but three cannels of info commercials and about the same number of shopping networks. Maybe folks with dishes can get other countries news but not I. If there is something major to report like a tragic death or such yes we hear of it, usually with the U.S stations affiliate (sp) reporter, but as far as picking up another countries station nope.

CNN International apparently is a different beast than the regular CNN we see here in the US. They have a broader perspective, the US version is the one that is heavy on entertainment news and news as entertainment. We have satellite TV and I can watch BBC America if I want, and there are a few other news stations like Asian etc. Australian I don't think so, although I think there is one Australian news show that I've seen listed before.

If we want international news we don't use the TV for that - there is the Internet and I also have XM satellite radio that has a BBC channel on it. TV is very old school for any kind of information. For news it will always be sub-standard to written sources.

More and more people have DVRs now and we record everything to be watched later. That's what I do as I have haphazard viewing times.

Dave, I think our news stations are becomming more of an intertainment stations, meaning they report what they think will sell not necessarly what is going on. What are your views on that?

On most news networks, unless there is some significant happening in a different country, we will here about it.
If you would be in the states, you would have to get on the Internet daily to keep up with your news in Australia.
Unless....... you had some whack job like Britney Spears running around over there then we would have you on the news several times an hour.

Surely they must have some foreign news. Like the results from the Australian open, or the current talks in Israel/Palestine/Saudi (especially when the president is/was over there). Apparently that dero party kid from Melbourne made it to world news.

What about the the Kenyan riots? They must have stuff on that.

So your telling me you haven't heard anything about the hundreds of Kenyans who have been killed over a supposedly rigged election.

What about the supposed assassination of the Pakistani opposition leader? And the aftermath?

What about the whaling issues at the moment with the Japanese?

You must know how bad your shock market is at the moment... or do they keep that info from you as well. What about the recession risk?

All our TV stations ABC, 7, 9, 10, SBS ALL have at least 5 minutes of World Affairs. We even get the scoop on the US vote tallies and such.

What about newspapers? How many people get a newspaper delivered every morning with world events and news?
