Actually Gnash I ended up going another way with the ones in the main bank... went through the bottom instead and to be honest drilled them too close to the edge... no matter...

Braced the barrels.... and little auto-siphons all in a row :D

Good to see you are learning from the experienced by testing before filling with gravel/hydro - looking forward to the regular updates

Things have changed a little from the original design... mainly the dutch pots down the railing....

Abandoned the idea as they were just too hard to brace with the weight of the water....

Will find more piccies tonight/tomorrow that show the system up to ready to go for fish ....

And there it's sat while I got into the hydro setup with Dean...

Watch those kinks Rope. I cut short lengths of PVC to keep the kinks at bay at certain sections of the hose.

With the dutch pots down the balustrade proving to be too problematical to brace effectively, it called for a re-think.

I decided to utilise them in a block of 8 (10 if they fit) up on the landing.

As they're a quick fill, quick siphon drain system and about 200ltrs all up they'll drain into the long black poly growbed where the hydro trays were originally intended to go.....

And then drain back to the fish tank.

As there'll be two banks of dutch pots... there will be two drain lines...

I may in the future divert one line to supply a couple of horizontal runs of pipe (ala NFT style) along the north facing wall space.....

(Apology to whoevers photo I've used.... lost the ones I had)

A serarate supply, by a very slow, almost drip feed, will supply about six strawberry towers (based on the "fruitwise" system - and some subsequent experimental adaptations) using the vertical space below the dutch pots.......
