A funny thing happened the other day when Freoboy was here at the shop, I lifted the outer bell on our siphon to show him the affnan style of reducing coupling on top of the inner pipe, only to find that there was none... Seems that we don't have an Affnan siphon at all.. :dontknow: I must keep a closer eye on whats happening here.

And we don't have a breather hose either. But we have two of these siphons that have run without a hitch for about 3 months now. Seems the trick to these was breaking the commonly held rules about siphons. We ran the drain pipe of the siphon right down into the fish tank/sump tank so that the end is always submerged below the water surface...

We also have a little hole underneath, you can see it where the black algae spot is..

Standard bell on top, but no ugly fiddly breather hose. It's funny what happens when you fiddle around trying lots of different things, you tend to lose track of exactly where your up to and what arrangement you have. But it seems that this style of siphon might work fairly well.

Thought I'd get a laugh, or flamed - didn't count on getting ignored.

Ditto. My 2 siphons were as pictured here - no reducing coupling, no breather breaker hose, but with the inclusion of a Venturi on the waste pipe. Only time I had issues with it was when pump head height varied significantly (infrequent top ups = major FT height variation). Increase/decrease of GB inlet flow from pump height had a direct and proportionate effect on siphon breaking times!

I've removed my siphons only to mitigate another possible point of failure - but they were hassle-free when up n running!
