Post subject:  Can chemical barrels be cleaned?

Hello, I live in Jamaica and I have been wanting to create my system for a while now but could not find any food quality barrels in JA. Lastnight I got lucky lastnight and found out I could buy some barrels from this hardware and also the caged box things. My problem is that these barrel were used to carry chemical and greases so I wondering if its possible to make my system out of this and life survives it(algae test maybe).
If I grow plants in this will they absord the chemicals > I eat plants.
BTW I don't plan on eating the fish tho > micromagnication....
Would appreciate a good answer on what are my choices.

Depends on the chemical. People have used round up drums that had rain water go through for a long time. And oils have been cleaned out of IBC's.
