LECA, light expanded clay aggregate, aren't sold at local hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's. Where would one go to get this stuff locally?

hmm, no hydro stores around here. it doesn't look like they're being produced in the u.s. (according to wikipedia). i guess it's not worth the shipping. plus with the dollar falling the way it's been, it doesn't look good.

Someguy.... Utah Sate University is recognised as one of THE leading hydroponics research institutes... and their research is the basis for many of the nutrient formulations in use today...

Maybe they can give some leads....

A friend of mine bought expanded clay balls from a concrete supply for $65/per yard. Seems they use the stuff to make light weight concrete structures. MUCH cheaper than LEAC branded balls..

If you can look up a hydroponics place anywhere around you will probably find some sort of expanded clay product (I know the hydroponics places around here have it though I don't know the particular brand.) There are many internet based hydroponics stores you could order from too though shipping would be a factor. I have found that many products come out similar in price after shipping if you compare total cost with a local retail supplier since the retail supplier will figure in their shipping costs into the final price.
Aquatic eco-systems carries it here in the states.

May be a bit late, but here's where I get mine:

They are local to me here in Atlanta, so I don't know what they're shipping costs are.
